Red Star Surf & Yoga Camp
Certificate of Excellence

Ok, Famara is a very quite, off the beaten track village with an amazing beach and mountain view. Perfect daily conditions for beginners. What makes the Red Star core soul is the team and the instructors, they really care about you and if you open up a bit then you'll spend one of the most enriching experiences of your life. The quality of the teaching is great, each instructor having his own style which makes it very interresting hearing different opnions to improve your surfing.
Furthermore you can sleep in one of the two surf houses, with a fun/surfer style decoration. You would have a common leaving room and kitchen to share. Cleaning is done daily.

Room Tip: In the summer time, I would advise to sleep on the terrace in the top floor: great view, nice breeze...

I stayed for 5 days, good place and good people. The camp is cheap and so is living in famara. The Island is great and there are many things to see and places where to surf. It has been a good experience but i recommend to rent a car, which is also very cheap, to see the Island.

Canarian Islands are great place to start with surfing. Especially the northern place - Famara. RSS I can recommand from all views. Accomodation (I was in guest house) was clean, full equipped. Close to shops (supermercados) close to restaurant and of course, close to surf shop and beach. Experienced instructors gives you lot of helpful instruction takes care of you/group during surfing lessons. I had no experience with surfing before, so I could not compare with other schools, but the approach to people and the services was better then I expect. To all whos thinking about yoga ... yes, go and do it! It helps for relaxing the muscles. I was surprised how good it can be.

Few tips:
- its good to plan day of rest after two days of surfing. Surfing is non common movement (if you are not profesional surfer) and even if you are in good physical condition its better to have one free day.
- in free day you can visit places like - Teguise in day of markets, El Gulfo or n.p. Timanfaya

Long story short: to start / improve surfing with RSS is the very good choice.

PS: details of my personal trip is written in czech, but somehow you can read it with google translate http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=cs&sl=cs&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fnasurf.blogspot.cz%2F and it can helps you to know details of place - photos, prices on island and free time places.

So... only 200 characters to describe..
tempting, relaxing, inspiring, uplifting and so far away from anything the rest of the world might call important, thre's just no other possibility than to describe it as unique. Red Star Surf, owned by a russian friend who I got to know in Berlin, lead by a crazy guy from Wales, assisted by beauties and photographers from Spain, Estonia and Russia, supported by a Surf Instructor from Australia, who must have ocean water running in his veins, Yoga teacher(esse) from Germany and last but not least of course the multi national people to meet in the surf houses, from all over Europe and more. Excellent in service, competence in advising, safety guarding in all situations and absolute knowledge and experience to be shared with you besides the unbelievable landscape. I've truly lost a piece of heart right there. And even if there were more surfshops in Famara, I'd never choose a different one, because the welcome and further care for you and your needs just made me feel home the longer I stayed. See you guys soon hopefully! Stilo Urso Branco and Jimmy Rocket! Best wishes and Merry Christmas... wish I was there!

Room Tip: Choose Red Star Surfhouses :)

I can highly recommend RSS to anybody hungry for a nice workout and ocean power. The location is laid back and authentic. Get the top floor room in the surf house on Calle Majuga and enjoy the salty breeze, sunrises, and starry night skies. The most special thing is of course the surf lessons, so rest well and absorb experience of your instructor (I learned from Gerry, massive respect to him).

been there 2 times. both at NY holidays. Famara is small wonderful village with a few surf schools. Red Star is a great one. I was pleased to study there. Cool place to get acquainted with surfing. Except surf lessons guys make zingy partys with different surf games. It was really fun pastime.
I want to come back there again and again...

I've been with RedStar 3 times over the past 2 years and have always had a great experience. My initial plan to go and re-charge batteries prior to starting a new job had worked out perfectly fine. Yoga in the morning was a great experience back then, and I actually took up yoga at home afterwards. The village of caleta famara where the surfhouse is located is a very charming little "fishervillage". There are at least two small supermarkets and several restaurants, but you can also have the full board option in the surfhouse - which was what i usually did. The landscape surrounding famara is spectacular - theres a vulcanic crater just a couple hundred meters from the surfhouse. For accomodation I can also recommend bungalows of famara - they all have a little garden in the typical style of the island (some kind of vulcanic garden) and amazing views of the beach and beyond. The downside of that is that you'd miss a lot of the fun that comes with having a lot of people in the surfhouse. As far as the surfing is concerned, instruction from the surf teachers was great fun and progress was good - and no one was left behind;). In case the waves were really bad, the team always offered an alternative plan, which would more than make up for the lost surf lesson. The island has great things to offer apart from its beaches. Artist Cesar Manrique has left many nice things on the island and inspired others to imitate his style...or maybe it’s the island’s style... with a lot of white..respect for nature... his house actually built in a lavastream (can visit). In the Vulcanic park of Timanfaya, which is basically a huge lavastream of 50 square km, you can feel like you’re on a different planet. There are also vineyards on the island where you can go for tastings, super interesting to see how they grow the vines and very tasty; Assuming waves are good, lessons finish in the afternoon, which leaves enough time to check out the island or go see the islands other famous surfspots where instructors and/or other surfers hit the bigger waves. Atmosphere with the team was always friendly and uncomplicated. It was nice to meet people from Spain, Russia, Norway and Germany. Downside is the risk of not wanting to return to your dayjob, ever.
