“Good View, Nice Breakfast”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2013

What was nice about this hotel is that it had a lovely German character. Nice friendly people where you felt wecomed. Free access to WiFi which worked really well. The room was comfortable but it and the bathroom were a little on the small side. Perhaps even a little basic. However, there was an amazingly large balcony with a great view over the Moselle and Cochem. The hotel is on the outskirts of Cochem and its a pleasant walk from the hotel along the river into the town. The hotel is almost on a roundabout and a road separates the hotel from the river. While our room was directly to the front, facing the roundabout and road we were not disturbed by the sound of traffic. Breakfast was good.

If I was going back to Cochem I would be delighted to stay here again.

We stayed for 2 nights as part of our mid Sep European trip. After spending $300 euros per night in Amsterdam, coming here for $107 euros per night seemed like an amazing bargain. Granted the rooms are small and there is no phone, but actually has better wifi than the Marriott's in Amsterdam and Heidelberg. Wifi here is at no extra charge and for multiple devices. Also there is a decent flat screen TV with the BBC feed of CNN (helps Americans to hear English on TV once in a while)
They also throw in a half decent totally free breakfast.
booked this via booking.com and it was justifiably highly rated.
Also great location, views, parking......gets a 9.9 out of 10.

Room Tip: ask for a view of the river/castle

This is a friendly family-run hotel around a mile beyond Cochem heading from Koblenz. It's on a small road island and only has the road between it and the Mosel River, and the balcony from our room offered a wonderful view of Cochem's castle as well as the river. There was no problem with noise. You can certainly walk in alongside the river from here, and it's all level.

The rooms themselves are unspectacular but clean and fine. The bathroom was quite small, but the shower was really powerful (love that).

A big part of the business is clearly the restaurant, which specialises in Mexican dishes as well as traditional ones. We sat outside in their patio area and enjoyed a very pleasant meal for three adults and a child that came to around 60 Euros with drinks, though they require you pay for it separately from the accommodation.

Breakfasts were OK and a bit more limited than some places (cheese, ham and bread mostly) but there was orange juice in jugs on the tables and it was a nice touch that they offered to cook eggs in the style you wanted (though that was the only hot food).

Wifi is included - just ask for the password.

We enjoyed our stay and it's a good option if you don't mind being a short way out of Cochem itself.

Overall: Big, clean, modern, comfortable rooms, a great breakfast, free wifi, and free parking make Stumbergers is a great choice in the Moselle Valley.

Location: Stumbergers is located right on the main road, about a mile south of Cochem. The road produces significant noise, but my room faced the back and was relatively quiet. Parking is free and on-site.

Room: The room was modern and comfortable, with free wifi and a flatscreen TV. My room had a small balcony... opening the balcony door and window allowed the room to stay cool in the evening. There was no air conditioning. Wifi was free and worked very well.

Services: There is a restaurant with nice outdoor seating and a view of the castle. Breakfast was good, with eggs made to order and great coffee.

Value: I found Stumbergers to be a good value for the money, especially if you have a car.

Room Tip: The rear of the hotel is relatively quiet. Facing the main road may be a bit noisy, especially in t...

This is the first time we had driven abroad, we had booked with a coach company a year ago, and they decided to cancel our holiday. So they did us a favour, because we had to organise everything ourselves, We had a look through all the Hotels in Cochem, and decided we liked the look of Stumbergers. We decided to make a booking, and could not have chosen a better place to stay, everything was perfect, room, food, and the staff were all very friendly, especially Safek who was the owner of the Hotel. The night we arrived he greeted us after a long journey, and helped us up to our rooms with our luggage. It was spotlessly clean, a lovely balcony overlooking the Mosell, and with views of the castle. We hope to return there sometime in the near future.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the Mosell and the views of the Castle are excellent.

Stumbergers is a riverside hotel and (Mexican-German) restaurant in Sehl, a suburb of Cochem. Although on the main riverside road, it doesn't suffer unduly from traffic noise and we slept soundly with the windows open on 2 of the 3 nights we were there (the other night was too cold, rather than too noisy!).

My wife stayed here with friends the previous summer, and recommended this as a great hotel for a romantic driving break from southern England on the recent Jubilee extended holiday weekend. The hotel is ideal for travelling by car, as it has a large car park, and plenty of free nearby street parking should the car park be unexpectedly full (we arrived at 9pm on a Saturday evening in June, when both restaurant and beer garden were pretty busy, and still had the choice of a couple of spaces).

The owner - who speaks very good English - is very friendly and helpful, suggesting that if we wanted to eat we should order before heading up to the room as the kitchen was due to close shortly. As it happened, we'd already eaten and didn't sample the restaurant food on this visit, but my wife spoke highly of it from her 2011 trip.

Rooms are very clean, airy and spacious. In particular, the bathroom (large walk-in shower, but no tub) in our room seemed to be very new and was extremely well-stocked for towels. The breakfast buffet was very nice, but relatively limited (cold meat, soft and hard cheese, cereals and very nice bread rolls) compared to larger chain hotels: one very nice touch was being asked each morning how I'd like my eggs and having these cooked to order.

Although situated in Sehl, slightly out of central Cochem, the walk along the riverside was a very pleasant 20 minute stroll (or around €7 in a taxi - handy if coming back from a wine-tasting with bottles in tow!) along a flat pavement. The station is probably another 10 minutes or so beyond the town centre, so probably best handled in a cab if you're toting lots of luggage, but don't rule this place out as it will be much less prone to street noise than the town-centre hotels.

The centre of Cochem has a lot of small wine bars and restaurants, and some exceptionally good "Weingut" tasting pubs (Haxel and Rademacher were our favourites, but there are others too), several of which do reasonably priced tasters of 3 or 4 glasses for €4-8 or so. There's also two Irish pubs (one on the riverfront, one just under the rail bridge on the road to the cable car) and a new microbrewery (opposite the latter Irish pub, on the ground floor of a multi-story car park and making use of an old fire station) with exceptionally good beer and food. The town centre was certainly liveliest/busiest on the Saturday night (compared to the Sun and Mon - it wasn't a holiday weekend in Germany), and it also got busy in spells when river cruise boats were moored (usually outside the mustard museum and the Hieronomi cellars). Because of the tourism, English (and Dutch - presumably the source of most of the tourists) seemed to be widely spoken.

The "seilbahn" or cable car up the Pinnerkreuzberg (the hill with the white cross on it, overlooking the castle) is well recommended for those with a head for heights. As we had the car, we used it to head down towards the far more touristy Bernkastel-Kues for a day-trip, stopping off at Kloster Machern on the way back for a late lunch and more homebrew for the non-driver. Trier, Koblenz, the Romantic Rhine and the Nürburgring are also within 90 minutes drive.

All-in-all, a fantastic hotel in a fantastic town, both of which are ideally placed for a laid-back German break. We'll be back!

Room Tip: Some rooms have balconies overlooking the Mosel, but that's also the side of the hotel with the...

After a pleasant stay for a week at Stumbergers in 2011, we decided to return this year for a week. We asked for room 3 which is the same room as last year with the best view from the balcony. The hotel is still spotlessly clean, the food in the restaurant and the breakfasts are still excellent and the staff are always in the right place at the right time to serve.
The only slight downside is now that the road junction outside the hotel has been revamped there seems to be more noise from the traffic if you have the bedroom windows open, but the effective double glazing seals out the noise with the windows closed.

Room Tip: Little bistro/bakery across the road is a hidden gem
