“Worst service, food ever!!”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

We came in very enthousiast because of a table with a beautifull view. When i told that it was so nice the waiter just sniffed at me. When we asked advise for a nice wine to go with the meal the answer was that they are all the same. Never realised that that answer was exactly true. Personal not friendly, the food was awfull and the wine and waterbottles, € 15.- for one bottle, were not opened at the table. We made a joke of marking the first empty winebottle, give it back to ask for a second bottle and guess what.....the second wine came in the same bottle....They think that the tourists are fouls and treat them like that.

We booked for 2 nights, were told that we were being given Room 5. Parking was quite limited because of location of hotel being on the main road overlooking the river. Hotel owner led us across the road to a parking place, and took our case over to the hotel. Normally in Germany you are shown the available room or rooms before you decide whether or not you wish to accept the offered accommodation. Instead, the owner had dumped our case outside Room 5 while we completed the booking paperwork with his wife.

When we entered our room, it looked pleasant enough, clean, and good views of the river. However, the bathroom was uncomfortably small. There was nowhere to put out our toiletries, I tried to hang our toilet bag on a hook in the bathroom, but because it was only a plastic "stick on" hook, the weight of the bag was pulling the hook from the wall. I turned on the shower which was only trickling with water, it was impossible to have a shower. The door of the bathroom had a window in it and would not lock, and there was no extractor fan.

The electric sockets were all loose, and coming away from the walls. We had a good night's sleep, but were not happy. We complained to the female owner about the shower, she insisted on coming straight up to our room to see for herself. She said that the shower head was blocked and that when her husband would get there in 15 minutes, she would get him to sort it.

We took our time over breakfast and returned to our room 11/2 hours later only to find that he hadn't been near the room, but was sitting in the reception area of the hotel, smoking. We'd had enough by then, we packed our bags, went to him and said we wanted to check out. He said that his wife had told him about our shower, and blamed the cleaners for not reporting the shower. He took our 90 euros for our stay, gave us a bottle of wine, and we left.

One of the reviews mentions that the hotel has recently been refurbished, I don't think Room 5 has had any refurbishments, and don't think the owners would have offered this room to a German client.

Room Tip: Don't accept Room 5

We got room # 3 on the first floor and it was not only a rather large room but also had it's own little balcony from where two people could sit with a nice glass of Moselvine looking at the Mosel just 20 meters away - and what more could you ask for? Well, maybe that the grill in the basement under the hptel didn't grill that many chickens the whole day long - it makes you kind of not very hungry in the end, but that was a minor thing. Because what matters here in this rather touristique town crowed with german pensionists is sitting on your own balcony drinking a glass of cold white Mosel while the Mosel itself going by. The room was not that cheap, had a nice tv and for some reason the sink was in the room like in the old days at French hotels - but the toilet and shower was fortunately in the bathroom... Breakfast OK and when the weather was nice you can enjoy it at the terrace in front of the hotel. Parking is free if you can find at spot on the riverbank.

Three of us were touring through Germany on our motorbikes and on our first night we stopped in Cochem and happened to park outside the Union Hotel, so it was the obvious place to try. It looked nice from the outside and the location was great, overlooking the river. We enquired about three ensuite rooms and the very helpful lady confirmed it was no problem (in perfect english) and at a very reasonable €45 per room per night including breakfast. It was also a bonus that we could leave our bikes right outside the hotel without any problems.

We were delighted to find we'd all been given nice big en-suite rooms on the first floor overlooking the river. Once we'd changed, we could explore Cochem town, which was right on our doorstep and there were plenty of bars and restaurants within a 5 minute walk.

Breakfast was served in the conservatory overlooking the river and was a continental style with plenty of fresh bread, coffee, eggs and pastries.

Check-out was hassle free and our freiendly host guided us on our way to our next destination further south in the Mosel Valley.

All in all, a bargain at €45, a great location and very friendly & helpul hosts. Would recommend this hotel for any bikers travelling in this area

Room Tip: Ask for rooms facing the river
