The Domhof is the sort of hotel that Germany does very well – always efficient, calm, pleasantly staid. Its location is lovely – around a leafy courtyard with Speyer’s vast cathedral peering in. The rooms are very comfortable, the breakfast is really excellent, service is good. There’s a free internet computer in the lobby.
Its triumph, however, is the superb Hausbrauerei a few yards away. We stayed in October, and so the beer garden wasn’t open, but this was no hardship – the inside was festooned with autumnal and harvest decorations, and the atmosphere terrific. Really good service, top-notch beer, good solid food, and a sense that you could sit there all day and night.
Speyer is a friendly, quiet and very pleasant town, dominated by the immense Dom (200 yards from the hotel – and yes, you can hear the bells, but they’re lovely, and you get used to them). There are plenty of good restaurants, and drinking options too (though none as wonderful as the Domhof itself). I recommend the Jewish Baths – built by the cathedral’s own builders and a fascinating delve into medieval history, with a lovely little orchard. There’s a fine technical museum complete with 747 and Antonov, and another good option is the Sealife museum down by the Rhine, which is a short walk through the cathedral’s park. Speyer is also well situated for wine-buffs, being only about 20 miles from the wine-route ; we visited Maikammer, and recommend it.
