The construction began in the 11th century, followed by a substantial extension in the beginning of the 12th century.
During the wars in the 17th and 18th century, the church suffered severe damages and was rebuilt in the beginning of the 19th century in a neo-Roman style.
Finally, the restoration of 1957-1961 aimed to bring the cathedral back to its original state
Special about the interior is the dwarf gallery, that runs around the entire structure.
