Owner description: The cathedral St. Mary and St. Stephen in Speyer is church that is unique in its spiritual, architectural, and historical dimensions. Day for day this house of God, founded in the 11th century, casts its spell on people, serves as a site of contemplation and prayer, and testifies to the legacy of romanesque architecture. Furthermore, the cathedral of Speyer is the gravesite of Salian, Staufer, and Habsburg rulers, thus functioning as a symbol of the medieval emperorship. In 1981, the cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. As an episcopal church, the cathedral of Speyer is the spiritual centre of the diocese Speyer. Built in the Middle Ages as a house (Latin: domus) of God, to this very day its entire architecture serves to lead mankind to the Lord: the floor plan, the decoration, and all measurements serve this purpose. As an episcopal cathedral church, as the cathedral's parish church, as a place of pilgrimage: mass is celebrated here every day of the week.

Nice city Speyer. Cathedral at end of main street, so great views if walk to top of viewing tower ( lots of steps 100+ - but good solid metal staircase and handrails) Used hand held audio guide ( impressive) as all our tour in German, although could have done English too as spoke fluent English when we ask a question.
Cathedral magnificent .

Not sure if there was a gift shop ( shame if not) but couldn't see one.

We attended a Pontifical High Mass in the Speyer Cathedral on Easter Sunday. It was a magical experience. Celebrant was the Bishop and a full orchestra and amazing choir provided a wide range of music from Gregorian chant to Mozart. Truly, a once in a lifetime experience.

An interesting cathedral well worth a visit. Outside is a monument showing Jesus at the Mount of Olives (see photo).

A Very beautiful town in Germany is Speyer. Our ship stopped in Speyer whic is a town of about 50,000 people. It is so clean. All the Town idling are beautiful with
Beautiful colored painting. All the streets and perfectly clean. People are walking and talking for their evening walks. We walked for two hours and loved it. The cathedral is a Romanesque Cathedral on the Rhine. We found Speyer Cathedral and Speyer the city absolutely charming. You will find beautiful sights that are picture perfect. Bring your camera. Strolling through Rhine gardens and finding the perfect beer garden to enjoy local beer and local foods is fun. Walt Okon, Springfield, Virginia

The Speyer Cathedral is beautiful inside and out. I traveled there with my husband and 2 young boys (5 and 2). When you drive into the area of town, park in the parking lot that is right off the highway. No other places to park near the church (2 euro for 2 hours). The outside of the church is beautiful you can see from the pictures. There is an open area where people sit and enjoy being outside. Down the walk way toward the Parking lot is a spider playground where the kids can let out steam before or after being quiet in the church. Inside the cathedral, it is all open. It is free to go into the church, but if you want to go down to the crypt it is 6 Euro per adult (kids were free). The crypt is interesting. There is loads of information about the church and the crypt in pamphlets and audio guides in all different languages.
