Owner description: The cathedral St. Mary and St. Stephen in Speyer is church that is unique in its spiritual, architectural, and historical dimensions. Day for day this house of God, founded in the 11th century, casts its spell on people, serves as a site of contemplation and prayer, and testifies to the legacy of romanesque architecture. Furthermore, the cathedral of Speyer is the gravesite of Salian, Staufer, and Habsburg rulers, thus functioning as a symbol of the medieval emperorship. In 1981, the cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. As an episcopal church, the cathedral of Speyer is the spiritual centre of the diocese Speyer. Built in the Middle Ages as a house (Latin: domus) of God, to this very day its entire architecture serves to lead mankind to the Lord: the floor plan, the decoration, and all measurements serve this purpose. As an episcopal cathedral church, as the cathedral's parish church, as a place of pilgrimage: mass is celebrated here every day of the week.

“Climb the tower and see the views”
Reviewed September 15, 2013

What was very good first of all was the audio guide which did explain the Cathedral and its history clearly and with interest. Huge place of course and compared with English Cathedrals was bare in side but visitng the paintings was astonishing and climbing the tower - not for those with vertigo -was well worth the effort as the views on a clear day were astonishing.

“Impressive Cathedral/UNESCO World Heritage Site”
Reviewed September 4, 2013

On a recent river cruise, we made a stop in Speyer and visisted the Speyer Cathedral (officially named the Imperial Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption and St. Stephen). This is an imposing structure of red sandstone with four towers and two domes. It was founded in 1030 and remodeled at the end of the 11th century. It is one of the most important Romanesque monuments from the time of the Holy Roman Empire. It was the burial place of German emperiors for almost 300 years. It is well worth a visit (as is the town of Speyer). It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1981.

“Interesting Structure”
Reviewed August 31, 2013

This was an excursion from our Uniworld river cruise, as we were bused into Speyer for an afternoon of site seeing. However it was a holiday in Germany & everything was closed, too bad as their was not a lot for anyone to do but drink & eat!!
