Owner description: The cathedral St. Mary and St. Stephen in Speyer is church that is unique in its spiritual, architectural, and historical dimensions. Day for day this house of God, founded in the 11th century, casts its spell on people, serves as a site of contemplation and prayer, and testifies to the legacy of romanesque architecture. Furthermore, the cathedral of Speyer is the gravesite of Salian, Staufer, and Habsburg rulers, thus functioning as a symbol of the medieval emperorship. In 1981, the cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. As an episcopal church, the cathedral of Speyer is the spiritual centre of the diocese Speyer. Built in the Middle Ages as a house (Latin: domus) of God, to this very day its entire architecture serves to lead mankind to the Lord: the floor plan, the decoration, and all measurements serve this purpose. As an episcopal cathedral church, as the cathedral's parish church, as a place of pilgrimage: mass is celebrated here every day of the week.

This was an excursion from our Uniworld river cruise, as we were bused into Speyer for an afternoon of site seeing. However it was a holiday in Germany & everything was closed, too bad as their was not a lot for anyone to do but drink & eat!!

“Beautiful facade”

Beautiful facade, but there is nothing much to see from the inside. However it depends on your interests.

Free entrance to the Cathedral itself. If you want to see the tombs of the Emperors , there is a small fee for that. The Cathedral is HUGE and very pretty. Worth the trip /

“UNESCO Cathedral; Beautiful Park”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2013

We visited this town on a walking tour from our cruise ship. The cathedral has many delightful carvings. There's enough English only if you've been to other cathedrals and know the layout. The hidden aspect is a former monastery that was attached to the right (facing main door) side. Have a look and you can make out where the sloping gables attached (and bricked-up former access doors). (We didn't pay extra to see the crypt.)

The other thing to enjoy without charge is the Cathedral Gardens and delightful park behind it, with an old tower and fragment of the former city wall that once circled the Altstadt (old town). There is also a sculpture portraying a legendary story.
