Owner description: The cathedral St. Mary and St. Stephen in Speyer is church that is unique in its spiritual, architectural, and historical dimensions. Day for day this house of God, founded in the 11th century, casts its spell on people, serves as a site of contemplation and prayer, and testifies to the legacy of romanesque architecture. Furthermore, the cathedral of Speyer is the gravesite of Salian, Staufer, and Habsburg rulers, thus functioning as a symbol of the medieval emperorship. In 1981, the cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. As an episcopal church, the cathedral of Speyer is the spiritual centre of the diocese Speyer. Built in the Middle Ages as a house (Latin: domus) of God, to this very day its entire architecture serves to lead mankind to the Lord: the floor plan, the decoration, and all measurements serve this purpose. As an episcopal cathedral church, as the cathedral's parish church, as a place of pilgrimage: mass is celebrated here every day of the week.

I was in Speyer for business, but walked into the Cathedral a couple of times and took more time to walk around the park as well. You can walk into the Cathdral for free and there is a park behind that is worth a walk as well and gives you a different view of the Cathedral. Find the stand with pamphlets in different languages and purchase one for a small ( 1 Euro) fee or take an audio tour. You will get much more from the experience if you do. It is just amazing to think about the age of the Cathedral.

This cathedral of much less adorned than other cathedrals I have visited but this in no way detracts from its splendour; in fact, I think the simplicity enhances its beauty and grandeur. Absolutely worth a visit!

The Speyer Cathedral is a study in multiple architectural periods. Walk around the building and look up, there is even work by the Lombardy School of carving. Then stop and remember that this was also the place of coronations for the Salians (Holy Roman Emperors) and was started by Conrad II in 1039 - almost a millennium ago. On going restoration work as of September 2012.

The cathedral is really impressive from outside because of its dimensions and shape, but the inner side is not so involving. In comparison with the several German baroque churches it seems simple and "naked". But if you remind the several "diet" occurred in the city anmd overall the one in which 6 princes and 14 German free cities "protested" against the declaration of the emperor against the Luther's thesis, you are able to perceive that you are in a relevant historical site. There is a Lutheran church in Speyer with an internal part much more beautiful.
