Owner description: The cathedral St. Mary and St. Stephen in Speyer is church that is unique in its spiritual, architectural, and historical dimensions. Day for day this house of God, founded in the 11th century, casts its spell on people, serves as a site of contemplation and prayer, and testifies to the legacy of romanesque architecture. Furthermore, the cathedral of Speyer is the gravesite of Salian, Staufer, and Habsburg rulers, thus functioning as a symbol of the medieval emperorship. In 1981, the cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. As an episcopal church, the cathedral of Speyer is the spiritual centre of the diocese Speyer. Built in the Middle Ages as a house (Latin: domus) of God, to this very day its entire architecture serves to lead mankind to the Lord: the floor plan, the decoration, and all measurements serve this purpose. As an episcopal cathedral church, as the cathedral's parish church, as a place of pilgrimage: mass is celebrated here every day of the week.

“Very Impressive”
Reviewed February 2, 2008

We visited the Cathedral in Speyer in December 2007 and were impressed with the detail that went into the construction of this building. Each tile has been placed so delicately, no wonder it took over 100 years to build it.
Very nicely located in the old center of Speyer, great access to a big parking lot. Under the Cathedral is the supposedly biggest crypt of the World and we were pretty disappointed that it was closed that day because of a memorial event (we will go back some day to see it!). A tip for visitors: don't just look up their website if the Chatedral is open but actually give them a call to make sure you can access everything on the day you want to visit.
The inside of the Cathedral is very nice, under each window a beautiful painting, it almost gives you goose bumps when the sun hits it and everything lights up.

“Great Romanesque Edifice”
Reviewed October 13, 2007

I am not an expert on cathedrals but this is a real gem! The cathedral is beautiful on the outside but is also lovely, open and bright on the inside. The burial grounds beneath the cathedral aren't dark and damp and are well marked and maintained. This cathedral would be reason enough to consider visiting the lovely town of Speyer.
