“Very Moving”

We were taken here by a friend who lives & grew up in Worms. Very moving piece of space. Felt honoured & very humbled to visit the cemetery.

“Important site to visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2012

I love history and I have Jewish ancestry so I found it fascinating and rather nostalgic. The difference between the old crooked tombstones and the newer more elaborate ones was a strong contrast of cultural like in those times.

“Unique piece of history”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2012

It was larger and older than the one in Prague. I especially like seeing the many stones by a couple large tombstones near the entrance with not only stones on top but rolled up paper messages and many on the ground.

“Oldest Jewish Cemetery in Europe”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 2, 2012

Named Holy Sands, tis cemetery has about 2000 graves dating back to 1076.
Entering one sees the Mortuary to the right beyond the Fountain.
A feeling of serenity & peace is sensed in this well kept place.
Wandering through its large expanse, the important Rabbis for Judaism are encountered such as Rabbi Meir of Rothenberg ( ob der Tauber) 1293-1307 & Alexander Ben Salomon Wimpler. These are near the entrance & can be easily identified by the huge numbers of stones & notes on top of & around the tombstones.(flowers are not in Jewish culture for cemetries)
Taking paths leading far to the left one arrives at the Valley of the Rabbis where the 1076 grave of Jacob ha Bachur is located, along with 1427 grave of Jacob Molin, known as the Maharil & the 1636 grave of Elia Loanz known as the Baal-Shem.
Many garves have at the head of their tombstones indicators to trades & prayer...a pair of hands, a deer, jug, teapot, horn, cap.
Such a history is here as there is in the township of Worms.
