“Could be better.”
Reviewed May 23, 2014

Museum was always closed and the static display is written only in German. It is ok if you have 5 minutes spare but not much to see and the tower entrance is closed to the public, so as you can see this tower from the beach then stay there you are not missing anything.

“Contrast today and 24 years ago.....”
Reviewed July 5, 2013

Kuhlungsborn - this charming seaside town on the North East Baltic coast is a gem.
Quiet sandy beaches with wicker work basket beach chairs, and attractive promenade complete with a light gentle breeze with interesting shops and restaurants. It is a family holiday destination, with chances to relax, and take in the sea air. Boat tips from he long pier to Warnemunde, line dancing demonstrations, and well maintained parks are all part of this enjoyable little town.
And then you see it; a hideous reminder of times only comparatively recent: the East German / Soviet border guards Watch Tower. As recently as 24 years ago this was used to control and spy on the activities of their own people, ensuring that no one escaped across the border to the Capitalist democracy of West Germany.
Chilling and I assume unloved, this is modern history of a sinister nature. There are posters / maps and photographic displays despite this i feel that these reminders of the bad times should be preserved, if only as a lesson to future generations

“Grimm reminder of the East German regime”
Reviewed April 1, 2012

Until 1990 the tower was used by the East German border guards to look for those who were trying to escape over the sea to West Germany or Denmark. Following the fall of the regime, the tower has been preserved as a monument and a museum. Not spectacular by itself, the observation tower is a grim reminder of the communist East German regime. The tower was equipped with a stunning 26000 W power reflector with a range of 16 km.

It is worth a short visit to as it demonstrates how keen the regime was to prevent the escapes.

A number of posters around (all, unfortunately, in German) give an explanation of the tower purpose, operation, and history of escapes from East Germany by sea (very few were successful). The tower was one of several posts along the Baltic coast. Today, only two remain - the second is located some 9 kilometres to the east near Börgerende - this is one in a dilapidated state.
