“Beautiful but expensive”
Review of Lake Tegernsee

Lake Tegernsee
Ranked #1 of 10 things to do in Tegernsee
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 4, 2013

The Lake Tegernsee is a very nice lake surrounded by mountains and as with most waterbodies has an area of peace and tranquility. The surrounding area gives a lot of opportunities for walks, there is a waterfall nearby and you can have a very nice beer or some bavarian specialties in one of the many restaurants and cafes around it.

There are regular boat lines which offer nice tours on the lake and there is lot´s of birdlife to discover. One caveat is: Te lake is pretty close to Munich and is a very popular area for weekend trips so it can get crowded and the prices are not rural bavaria but munich city.

Lake Tegernsee is beautiful at all times of the year with plenty of activities. Well worthwhile.
I would recommend anyone to visit the area as it has so much to offer.

The area consist of the beautiful lake and parish church of Saint Quirinus. The north wing hosts the Herzoglich Bayerisches Brauhaus Tegernsee (Ducal Bavarian Brewery of Tegernsee), one of Germany's oldest breweries. Boat rental at Tegernsee cost 9 Euro for 30 minutes but it was very pleasant and amazing experience. One of the best places to eat and drink not only in Tegernsee also in Bavaria is Bräustüberl beer hall . My favorite dish was smoked salmon with Bavarian style potatoes pan cake

I admit, I am highly prejudiced. As a child growing up in Germany, I spent almost every summer vacation at Lake Tegernsee and have many magical memories. I recently returned to show my husband and children where I spent the best days of my childhood and still loved it. Unfortunately, the bed and breakfast we used to stay at every year has closed, but the rest of what makes the place so special is still there: The gorgeous mountain scenery, the beautiful, blue lake, the little towns with their colorful wooden houses and lakeside walkways. You can take a cruise around the lake on a sightseeing boat or rent a smaller boat and explore at your own pace. There are sophisticated boutiques, tacky souvenir stores and nice restaurants. To me, Lake Tegernsee represents what Bavaria is all about. Lake Tegernsee is easily reached from Munich by car.

One of the smaller Bavarian lakes in a wonderful mountain-ringed location. Small local shops selling a wide range of souveniers and local services. A wonderful foil to the excesses of Oktoberfest, well worth the relatively short drive from Munich.
