“great hike to see”
Reviewed January 5, 2013

a good hike up the hill to visit the church and chapel. Very ornate as is usual in Catholic churches from the old days. I especially enjoyed the smaller carpenters' chapel which was built in honor of those murdered during a Christmas day uprising centuries ago.

“strangest an most charming of all churches seen”
Reviewed May 2, 2010

In fact, this is a so called 'doppelkirche', which means it are 2 churches ajoining. The 2 towers are locally named: crowns of Bad Tölz. One goes uphill passing a ‘way of the cross’. At the end of this path there is a chapelof mourning. In this chapel there are statues, and 2 stairs lead up to the inner where Christ is laying at the cross, flanked by the statues of Johannes and mother Mary. His face lookes at the frescos at the wall, showing stages of Jesus’ life. Next to this mourning chapel is the statue of St. Leonard. Further uphill one ends at the complex. Next to the church there is the Leonardichapel, in honour of St. Leonard, patron of cattle. An iron chain is wrapped around the chapel to resemble his suffering. Each 6th november there are festiveties and a parade is held. 80 Carriages (which can not have tyres but the wheels have to be ironcasted) drive twice around the chapel, via the ‘way of the cross’, trough the marketstreet, past the Mühlfeld church back to the chapel. 25.000 visitors join these festivities. A wooden cross was placed at the mountain in 1711 and in 1718 7 chapels were added to the way of the cross. Later on a church was built (the Holy Cross), and some more later a 2nd church (the Holy Grave) was built ajoining the previous one. A Golgothahill and crusifixian group was added in 1735. So in fact, this church exists of 2 churches, whereas the back of the church is the oldest. There is an ‘aufstiege’ (stairs) flanked with angelstatues. This leads to an altar, which is protected by a fence. In the last built church (first to enter, past the portal) the statuegroup was closed and shut by painted shutters. I have seen pix on the internet where the statuegroup was visible. However, I have no idea when it is supposed to be opened... At the Calvary mountain one can enjoy the panorama over Bad Tölz and the Isar river.
