“I love the location of this hotel”
Reviewed October 3, 2011

I have stayed here a number iof times because of its location near MUC airport. Freising is a quaint Barvarian well worth spending time in. But I stay there because there is a direct bus service between the airport and Freising which runs evey 20 minutes. Freising also has train service and S ban to Munich.

Hotel Zur Gred is a very short walk from the bus stationn/ train station . ( Easy enough to walk with a suitcase if it has wheels ) Ther is a multi story parking lot just steps from the hotel and the hotel can provide you a card fro free access.

The restaurant is excellent and you are made to feel part of the family. I stayed here during a world cup soccer game and the proprietor bought a round of drinks each time Germany scored.

This is not a five star hotel, but it has lots to offer compared with a big box, and at an attractive price.

There is no free internet, and the pay for service they offer is expensive, but that would be my only complaint.

In August I booked for two of our work collegues to stay at Hotel zur Gred in September for 4 nights by phone and confirmed it with a fax. On arrival they were told there was only room for two nights and it seemed that a large travel party had arrived. I think anyone would be disappointed to have to rush out and find somewhere else to stay. The booking was made due to it being in the centre of Freising and close to where they were working. I wouldn't recommend such a place that doesn't honour bookings. I am afraid we have no idea what the place is like inside either!

I go there pretty often, since its location is very good if you need to stay near the airport (Bus 635) or want to go to Munich (S-Bahn). Its centraly located in Freising. Nearby are restaurants, cafes, icecream shops, drugstores, supermarkets, pharmacys, a movietheater etc. I think your getting my point of centraly located. The rooms are oldfashioned. Some have a private bath others, if you want to pay less have a washing situation in the room but showers and WC are to share on each floor. Everything i ever encountered was clean and i am picky about cleanlyness. Its a family run business and i can say for my part that they always were friendly to me. About the restaurant, evenings the food is good, breakfast is a bit steril but okay(i suggest cafe Panini, around the corner). There is WLAN at the hotel for charge.

It was convenient to the train station, about a 400 meter walk away, and the room was clean enough, but the Herr running the place was not friendly, and I even tried speaking German to check in. The hotel itself is clean and nice enough for the common traveler, which we are, and it's very convenient via bus # 635 to MUC from the Freising Bahnhof, but the absence of a friendly greeting or response turned me off to the man and the place.

We stayed at this property based on other TA reveiws. We were looking for a reasonably priced hotel to stay for one night prior to a morning flight out of Munich. Making a reservation directly with hotel via email was very quick and convenient. We arrived by car and were given an electronic card to allow us to park for free in a a garage right down the street from hotel. This was very convenient. Our room was rather "70's era", but was fine for the 1 night we needed (although I think it would have been a little depressing to stay there much longer). Location was very central and we were able to walk everywhere we needed to go (window shopping, grocery store, ice cream shop, town square). We talk a fairly long walk to Weihenstephan Braustuberl (restaurant and beergarten) for a fantastic dinner and super beer. This hike was worth every step - even our 12-year old thought so! We obviously did not eat at hotel restaurant, but it looked very popular when we stopped in for a beer before heading up to our room for the night. Breakfast was a little disappointing: the usual meat, cheeses, 1 kind of roll, and assorted spreads. Great coffee, and hot chocolate for our son. However, there was no fruit, no juice, no yogurt or cereals. Overall, this hotel suited our needs. It was very easy to get to from the airport, with very clear roadsigns pointing the way. Also, we were able to fill the tank of our rental car in Fresing, and it was still registering as full when we got to the airport.

Hotel Zur Gred is in the town of Freising which is 20 minutes away by public bus from Munich Airport. I paid 45 euros without breakfast for a one night stay. Other hotels close to Munich Airport are charging a much higher rates between 55 to 70 euros in the budget range. This is a good value budget hotel for Munich Airport if you have an early departure the next day. You can save money on transport as you take the public bus No 635 outside Munich Airport Central Concourse to its terminal, Freising Bahnhof or Freising Railway Station. The cost for the one way ride is 2.20 euros in Nov 2007. You are not at the mercy of those expensive shuttle rides provided by hotels in other towns nearby to Munich Airport which charge about 6 to 10 euros for a one way trip & whose shuttle schedule is haphazard & will keep you waiting for a long time. Here the public Freising bus no 635 leaves from Munich Airport on a very regular schedule every 15 minutes & vice versa from Freising Bahnhof whose earliest departure starts at about 4am to Munich Airport.

Hotel Zur Gred is a short 5 minute walk from Freising Bahnhof. Walk in a straight line after you reach the Bahnhof & walk across a busy road with traffic lights, then past a river. You are almost near the hotel after crossing the river. The hotel is on your Left hand side. The owner of the hotel who checked me in looks different from the picture on its website, perhaps he is the son becos he looks much thinner than the chap in the picture! The owner is also a chef at the hotel cos this family owned hotel also has a restaurant next to it. I had to ring the door bell 3 times before he opened the door in his chef's outfit!

He was cheerful about it even though he was busy in the kitchen. The room was small but cosy with a good heating radiator that was working very well on a very cold night. The toiletries like soap & shampoo are kept in the toilet cabinet so remember to open the cabinet to take it out. The shower cubicle is small. It was quiet during the night & you can sleep well.

All in all a very good value for money hotel for a very short stay that will get you to Munich Airport in a very short time at a low cost!

We were catching an early flight out of Munich and we stayed at the Hotel Zur Gred on the advice of a friend. We found the hotel average in all respects. There is a lack of parking due to its location near the train station (Bahnhof). It is located in a foot traffic zone and is well suited to those arriving by train.

The big plus is that it is near the Munich Airport and a direct bus can be taken to the terminals. However, if you are traveling by car, we would recommend a stay in Erding. It is a little farther away from the airport, but Erding is a nicer town in our opinion, with a nicer selection of hotels and better restaurants.

Freising is a university town and Erding is a calmer residential location. It would depend on what you are looking for. The highlite to Freising are the bears! Local merchants sponser fiberglass bears that decorate the main streets.

The Zur Gred did have comfortable rooms and large bathrooms. Downside: there was lots of cigarette smoke. While we did not eat there, we have heard that their restaurant is very good. We chose, instead, to explore a sushi bar nearby in Freising.

All in all, we would rate the hotel as average compared to our other stays in the local area.

  • Liked — Large rooms.
  • Disliked — The cigarette smoke.
