Location, town square Alzenau. Friendly Bavarian restaurant, with fine home cooking, excellent menu for meat eaters, 7/8 vegetarian choices, limited to dishes containing cheese and cream, although I think they would prepare something vegan style if you speak German (or translate what you want and write it down beforehand), or speak to the odd staff member who speaks very good English (most speak a little, but few fluent). Menu written in English also available on request. Choice of beers excellent, all locally brewed beverages, and worth trying them all. Seating is inside or outside, and I fully recommend sitting outside on a hot Bavarian evening in the summer for a beer or three, although you would be wise to book a table in advance as every evening in the nice weather is busy, and from Thursday through to Sunday can be packed outside with any empty tables reserved. Food recommendations, anything from the menu is good home cooked food, served in pans, large plates and breadboards, and almost all main meals are mountainous portions. Vegetarian, the best are the cheese noodles, and flammkuchen which is like a thin crispy pizza with cream, feta cheese, tomatoes, olives and herbs on, again for vegans I think they can cook without dairy, or prepare a salad without cheese, and also a jacket potato (without the milk based herb sauce) if you can make yourself understood, also vegan friendly sides available if you can make yourself understood. If not, why not just eat something vegan from the local supermarkets? Most have an abundance of fresh and ripe fruit and veg, tofu based faux meat products, and a huge selection of bread, and then simply enjoy a few drinks on the porch here, and enjoy the great atmosphere. 3 out of 5 for vegetarians who don't mind dairy products (4 if you really like cheese or milk based products), 1 out of 5 for vegan food, 5 out of 5 for meat eaters. 5 out of 5 for anyone wanting to enjoy a local beer, although strict vegans do your homework on Bavarian beers (3.8 averaged out). Prices, from as little as 5€ to 18€ for food (steak being the most expensive, but locally sourced, around 2.9E for a 500ml beer.

On one of the first sunny days in June I decided spontaneously to go for lunch to a nice restaurant in my home town. By walking around in the city I found the 'Alte Post' on a quiet square opposite the city's church.

On the terasse there are a lot of tables, a view protected by a canvas blind.

The day's menu offered some seasonal products like fresh Asperagus from local farmers and local wine from the vinyards nearby.

The personnell was very friendly and the food came within a reasonable time after the order. The food was prepared very good, excellent seasoned and tasts fantastic.

The price for a meal including wine and coffee ranges from 15 - 30 Euro per person, which seems affordable for normal budget.

The Alte Post in the centre of this solid but unremarkable town east of Frankfurt delivers a Pleasant modern take on German classics in a friendly and comfortable environment. It isn't fancy but the cooking is solid and the service is prompt and efficient. A lengthy menu displays seasonal and regional specialities as well as one or two house specialities. The quality is excellent and the portions are extremely generous - you don't often see salads piled so high they almost tumble off the plate. The schnitzels are good, as is the steak and there are some lighter options if you hunt for them in a list of rich and heart-busting Typically German dishes. Prices are good and the staff are friendly and helpful. Not a place to make a detour for, but if you are visiting the big industrial estate on the outskirts of the town then this is the place to head for.
