We stayed at the Mercure Villingen-Schwenningen on ne night in June 2010. This room was booked on the Hotels.DE website. On this website we first put in the parameters that we were looking for a double room for one night for two people. It gave us a price for this of 92 Euros including breakfast. We chose to book the hotel because on the advertisement page it stated that all rooms have internet access.
On arriving at the Hotel we checked in and enquired regarding the internet availability, the girl on reception informed us that our room did not have wifi connectivity but that there was a cable connection in the room. On reaching the room we looked into this and discovered that there was no cable. We telephoned reception and were told it was through the telephone. The girl had to visit the room as there were no towels in the room, she looked at the telephone and could see no way of connecting a cable. Also what we had been told on reception was a Superior Room with a double bed was in fact, 2 single beds pushed together leaving one bed against the wall, with no night stand, hardly a ‘superior’ option!
We went out for dinner and spoke to the girl on reception who assured us that the internet problem would be sorted out for our return. On returning to the Hotel later that evening we found the manager on reception, he told us the price of our room had been increased as there were 2 people staying, something that had been very evident at check-in! He informed us that we should have selected that option when we booked, we told him that we had indeed done that, but he was very dismissive of our response. When we pushed him on the internet availability, he told us it was too expensive for us to connect with a cable and that wifi was not available in that room. In short Mr Frank was very rude and seemed to regard for the internet as a irrelevance. He was very unwilling to assist in any way and was generally totally un-helpful.
We checked out the next morning without being able to connect to the internet, one of the prime reasons for us booking that particular hotel and with a larger bill than we had expected. The room was small and cramped and certainly not a superior room. In fact 2 single beds with separate bedding do not constitute a double bed. This is what you might expect in a small Gasthof, but I would have thought that this is not what you would expect in a 4 star hotel.
