I am not normally this negative when reviewing a place BUT... When you go to a premium location such as this place, you are prepared to pay for a premium rate and you'd hope that you'll be getting good if not premium service from the facility providers ( eg restaurant, accomodation and event organisers). However, this place is no better than a backpacker in a small township, worse food and services than what you'd get from any fastfood outlets and event management was no better than a student hostels bar....

I am Shocked with the room price based on what we were getting! Shocked with how poorly maintained the facilities are!

Accomodation: Poor service- unfriendly staff @ reception -operating a resort as a family business is not a great idea!

Restaurant: Poor service- slow and unproffesional staff- Food wasn't that great either

Poor communication by event staff (during wedding) - Charging extra for under delivered services. Wasted sl much drinks and food and then charging the customers for it. I've seen better public Toilets and equipment than what is available.

The current management need to step up or step down! It's easy to rip guests off when there's only one player in the area - but this 'resort' fails in meeting any hospitality practice standard!

We spent two nights here for a Friday wedding. The meals at the Agave restaurant were great, as was the catering for the wedding reception.

We were in a double bedroom chalet. It is all spread over a few steep unpaved roads that are one car width, so you need to take care in case of oncoming traffic. There is no air-conditioning and no fans, so we were sweltering in the night heat. I believe that the chalets have individual owners, so there are differences in the crockery and other items. They have three locked cabinets, presumably containing their possessions.

The rooms have all appliances you would find in a home, so you can cook a roast, use a microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, etc. The water pressure is also very strong. You are given a small carton of milk once during your stay, so we had to drive to Waiuku to buy some more.

The only negative in our room was a slight smell of sewage, possibly because they must have a septic tank system there (it wasn't even in our GPS map).

There is almost no mobile phone reception, but there is free wi-fi Internet in most chalets and the Agave restaurant complex. This was great for Facebooking the wedding as it happened.

The wedding was in the open and a strong wind almost blew away the wedding tent. The beach is used by surfers but it isn't a safe beach on account of a strong rip.

Room Tip: Take your own portable air-conditioner in summer (if you have one).

Went for a family wedding............and in the end; really wanted to stay for any reason I could manufacture.

You know how you get told a family member is getting married, and you would really rather have prostate surgery then attend?

Well a hop across the ditch from Sydney to Auckland.
A mild scenic drive to Waiuku and we were suddenly standing on a bluff looking out past New Zealand's beautiful west coast (think The Piano) and back at Australia.

We each had self contained chalets looking out across the property and ocean.
The chalets are furnished with contemporary yet warm and inviting furnishings with a tea and coffee service provided complimentary on the bench.

To say it was magic would be an understatement.

The wedding was held in the main function and reception area and it was done low key yet so lovely and genuine......................Big picture windows surround this area, and allow guests never to be bored with unwanted conversations you have been avoiding for years with relatives and the pain was further lessened with a full bar.

The reception and food were brilliant and all done on site from the restaurant.

Breakfast the next morning was a whopping KIWI feast or as Aussies call it The Big Breakfast.........sensational.

All staff were beyond pleasant, accommodating, and just downright lovely gentle people.
No requests from any of us was ignored or late during the entire stay.

I strongly recommend this brilliant venue for a holiday of reading, relaxing, and just soaking in the beauty of New Zealand's west ................ bring the kids, send them to find Hobbits.....stay inside watch the ocean and catch up with your soul.

Room Tip: A request while booking for a Chalet that faces the bluff and water will not fall on deaf ears. The owners are seriously accommodating and really eager to allow you a good experience.....add in the exchange on the KIWI dollar and consider a longer stay.

I stayed here for a wedding in January 2013 and honestly I couldn't fault my stay. The venue itself is stunning, set right on the cliff overlooking the black-sand beach, and the restaurant, reception room and all the accommodation chalets certainly make the most of the scenery with large windows of the view. We had asked to use the projector for the speeches for the wedding, and Roddy the manager couldn't have been more helpful on the day. Food and service was fantastic, accommodation stunning and very clean. The only thing I would mention to be careful of is breakfast the next day - it wasn't cheap, and as most of the wedding guests were staying the night, we all checked out at 10am (as requested) and went for breakfast. They clearly weren't expecting this, as they ran out of most things on the buffet and it took them a while to replace the hot food.Overall though, a fantastic stay and highly recommended.

The Agave Restaurant is situated on the edge of the cliff overlooking the spectacular west coast beach of Karioitahi, and I believe it is part of Castaways. The restaurant is worth visiting for the views alone... If you are fortunate to have a beautiful clear evening you can watch the sun set over an empty sea while you dine, which is a real treat. We have visited the restaurant twice recently and have enjoyed the smart/casual environment and a variety of menu options including "cook your own steak", and well-presented and delicious plated meals. Overall both evenings have been really enjoyable; providing well-paced service with a lean towards lesuirely, and the food has been of a very good standard - no complaints at all . (I would suggest that management have a chat to the wait staff about good service etiquitte though - greeting your guests with " are you guys ready to order" is not really in keeping with the place, but is only a small gripe.) Pricing is ok too - between $25 -$35 for a main.

We lingered on the deck until late, and there was no hurry-up to leave which we appreciated. Thanks, we will return again.
