Hotel Hospiz Tubingen
Ranked #6 of 18 Hotels in Tubingen
Reviewed August 30, 2011

Hotel Hospiz is located at the heart of the old town, 50m from the the market square in an entirely rebuilt several hundred year old building. While the interior seems to have been gutted entirely with new-built stair cases, some of the rooms clearly follow the old lay out and may be small by today's standard. Fans are provided by when it's hot (and does in the summer to up to 35C) the absence of aircon is noticeable. As is the tradition in German mid-range hotels, breakfast is continental although (very good) scrambled and soft-boiled are available. However, the great choice of breads, yogurts, jams, cakes and do offer plenty of fresh and good alternatives. Free German local and national newspapers. One draw-back of the central location is that it isn't quiet unless there aren't any people outside. Overall, an excellent choice for Tuebingen and I would return, largely for the good location next to restaurants and the beautiful old town.

I went to university in Tuebingen many years ago and even then, my family would stay at the Hospiz and I have done so a couple of times when visiting Tuebingen myself. It's the perfect place to stay when you want to be right in the heart of this old university town and explore it on foot. Some rooms are small, as the hotel is an old building typical for this area, but to me, that's part of the attraction and the views across the roofs of Tuebingen are great.
It's probably not the best place to stay if you frequently need your car. The hotel staff are happy to park it for you in a locked up car park somewhere nearby, but you have to ask them to bring your car out every time you need it. So if you'll be doing lots of driving, it might be better not to stay so close to the town centre, which is all pedestrian zone, too.

Room Tip: I love the rooms on the 5th floor!

I stayed here while doing an attachment at the university.
LOCATION:
In a traditional building in the heart of the old town near the market square. It really is just a beutiful short walk to just about anywhere. It great for the university, nightlife and day-life too.
ROOM: quiet, nice view with a tv and small en suite. It was reassuringly clean and had a nice comfy bed!
STAFF: warm friendly accommodating and helpful.
BREAKFAST: amazing !!!
WiFi: was free. You just need to register for it.
When I return I shall stay here again :)

Got in Sunday evening June 20. Our car was parked by the staff. The rooms were small, but crisp. A two minute walk got us to the Schloss (castle). This hotel is in the old downtown, not 300 feet from the Marktplatz. The farmer's market and flower market were thriving first thing in the mrning. The breakfast was a full table of meat, cheese, cereal, many juices, bread/bagels and some other things. I was last here at 17. We lived in Tubingen in 1975. It was a memorable, enjoyable "homecoming." Everything is a quick, convenient walk from the Hospiz. In London, we were at the Westminster Bridge Park Plaza -- loved it, but not more than the Hospiz. For a small university city, the Hospiz was just what we wanted.

I had stayed here before, as guest of the famous university, part of which is housed in the castle, to which the alley from the hotel entrance leads. From there, fantastic views reward you for the short, steep uphill walk. We were not disappointed. The central location is just perfect, just a few steps to the old market place with its beautiful old houses and city hall. Some rooms have views and are worth the extra cost, if you enjoy watching ancient towers and rooftops from which on a weekend, a brass band may play. The river is just a short walk down. Cars can stay in the hotel's underground car park. As the building is historic and may not be changed, some rooms have awkward shapes and small bathrooms, but we think this better than the standard format found in some hotel chains.

I spent two nights at the Hotel Hospiz during a visit to Tübingen university, during what the locals described as a relatively hot spell (highs of around 30/86 degrees). The hotel is excellently situated just a few feet from the center of Tübingen's beautiful old city, about 10 minutes' walk from the train/bus station. The rooms are in excellent condition. My single room had two adjacent single beds, of which only one had been made up. The free wifi works well. Breakfast is a fulsome German affair, though not the best I've experienced. The only thing that I missed was air conditioning - in the heat it got quite stuffy in the room, and the only way to let even a little cool air in was to open the windows wide in the evening, and ignore the fact that windows directly across the cobbled alley could look directly into the room. A nice place to stay during 3 seasons, but give it some thought if you're traveling in the summer and are spoiled by A/C like me.

I've been to Tubingen before and chose this hotel for its location - directly in the historic city center. Reception staff were friendly and I could check in earlier than stated in the booking form. My room was very clean and had a comfortable bed, however it was very dark and dingy-looking, and the TV was placed at an odd angle so you could not watch it from the bed. Unfortunately, there was a large tour group staying at the hotel, and you could hear all the noise in the corridor (the guide apparently knocked on everyone's door in the evening and in the morning, resulting in a noisy stampede down the hallway). At breakfast, the staff seemed overworked - not enough crockery and cutlery, empty bowls of food not refilled etc. All in all, it was OK for one night; maybe the double rooms are a bit nicer.
