Lovers of offal should make a beeline for their 'sauernieren' perfectly cooked kidneys in a rich, piquant sauce. The mushroom maultaschen were also excellent. the terrace was closed so we were lucky to get a seat in the dining room, which is quite small.

Thank Nicky H

The food is excellent and beautifully served. Being vegetarian did not matter as they were very good at adapting traditional Swabian cuisine to vegetarian preparations. The salad was excellent with slices of mauganeschtle filled with vegetables. Desert was excellent with a glass od delicious apple schnapps. Recommended for atmosphere and food quality.

There are not so many places in Tuebingen to eat outside but off the street and with a view. At the back of the Schloss hotel is a shady terrace with about ten tables looking down on the North side of the city. Don't be put off by the jokey menu written (in the German version) in local dialect; behind it is a competent kitchen. As well as Swabian standards such as Maultaschen, here in half a dozen varieties, there are some non-meaty dishes at reasonable prices. Several local wines are offered by the glass and the two we tried were of good quality. We found the service to be efficient and the food of a good standard. While we would probably not come here in the winter, the enjoyment of the quite terrace made this a very pleasant lunch.

The restaurant is part of a hotel, up the hill towards the Schloss, in the Old Town. It is an easy walk from the centre of the town. If you follow signs for the Scloss you will come to it. Driving to it may be more interesting than you would wish and I would recommend walking.

The room is not huge and seats about 38 people, but has a nice feel to it. I liked the decor and the ornaments. Outside there is a terrace with good views over Tubingen which is popular in summer.

The staff were friendly and welcoming. My companion speaks fluent German which undoubtedly helped, but they were also able to speak English if required.

I had a fresh salad as a starter which was one of the best I have had. They warned me it was big, and it was. Great fresh ingredients including asparagus, and a real pleasure.

We both had maultaschen, with asparagus and king prawns, as a main course. Really good. We had no room for dessert. The wine list was very decent. Service was fine, the food was good, like the very best home cooking, and I recommend it if you have the chance.

Thanks to the fellow Trip Advisor Contributors my wife and I decided to try this restaurant. I am not at all in favour of choosing hotel restaurants, it's rare to find a good one. So here's one of those rare ones. The one item that tells you its a hotel restaurant is the decor which appears more suitable for the breakfast serving. But the food and service here are both very good. Being newbies to Tubingen we just had to have the local suggestions, "Maultaschen" is unique to this area - consider a large ravioli, and it's certainly worth trying. Combined with a local red wine, this makes a good combination. Then their desserts !!!
Definitely worth visiting for a Swabian experience.
