“Good experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 23, 2012

Rooms were clean and neat. Beds were comfortable. Wish the room had a programmable "safe" for my passport and computer

Breakfast was top notch. Large selection. Available for long time-frame. Food/coffee, etc was restocked continually. Room is nice looking and modern.

Bar was nicely done and bartender very accommodating. Our group arrived back at the hotel quite late and the bartender kept things open for us and was very nice about the whole situation.

Securing WiFi is a bit cumbersome (and slow as well). Wish the property had an exercise room. But, overall, was very satisfied with the stay.

Don't be put off when you first arrive at the Carathotel Basel and discover it is in an ugly little town on an ugly little street and, omg, it's a businessman's hotel. In fact, the hotel will surprise you. A wonderful and friendly staff; large rooms with views of nearby (ten minutes) Basel; incredible buffet breakfast included in the room price; really comfortable beds; and just a few minutes away from the Vitra HQs, the one and only reason to be in Weil am Rhein, one of the great treats for an architecture and design buff. Icing on the cake, the hotel is only 4 km from the Beyeler Foundation with its brilliant collection of modern art.

And you avoid the incredibly high prices of Basel! You can drive there in 10 minutes, park, see the main sights, and then return to Germany to eat at affordable rates rather than the scandalously high prices charged in Basel.

So, yes, the hotel looks like everything you might want to avoid as you drive up, but once you check in it will be worth it. Location, cost, convenience, hospitality, breakfast and generous glasses of wine. Did I forget to mention that you can slice and squeeze your own oranges at breakfast for really fresh juice, or be lazy and just pour from the pitcher on the table.

Did I forget to mention that this place is tops in value for price.

And how could I forget to mention that Vitra is a marvel, and worth the 7 hours I spent there.

Room Tip: If you are there on weekends, you can ask for a high floor room and they will likely accommodate you...

Pretty typical large hotel in appearance. However, the rooms were dingy, the A/C wasn't working and you had to pay for parking in the, mostly empty, hotel lot. Definitely not worth the money. May be suitable for the business traveler, but not for me!

Large hotel for the area located in industrial - business zone. The Hazienda Mexican restaurant food was awful. Vegetables were not fresh cut up vegetables but rather volume processed frozen or canned served with mystery meat. Just as awful was the restaurant service. Rooms were adequate though dingy and poorly ventilated. Serviceable for one night but I would not return.

Friendly staff. Helpful travel advice.
Comfortable room, although some attention to detail would help as the curtains had several hooks misssing so drawing all of the light out was difficult.
No traffic noise so a good nights sleep.

Good quality breakfast.
Would stay again.

If travelling to Basel airport (Swiss side) allow 30 minutes drive as you may get delayed at the border. This is due to the Hotel being on the German side

This Carat Hotel - former Atlas Hotel - has become an excellent choice and delivers exceptional value for money. The breakfast ist above and beyond expectations. These hotel beds provide best quality for sleep and regeneration. The spacious rooms are really a pleasant surprise to travelers, who have been stoved in those small closets, which are being offered in New York and called hotel rooms at triple and quadruple rates, compared to the rates here. Also: Excellent and safe parking facilities, cozy hotel restaurant and bar. This is now really a place for a nice stopover or a relaxing week-end. Very recommendable!
