Has spectacular views over the town. Contains a very fine dining room and staircase, and the tomb-like 'green royal room' which must have been some sort of a trick played on visiting royalty. But in the end is just a lot of rooms with stuff in.

Really enjoyed our walk around the castle with helpful self guided notes to exhibits which were, sometimes, in English. The views were exceptional and the surrounding woods had some great undemanding hiking trails. There were a couple of restaurants which took full advantage of these views where you could sit and enjoy a leisurely meal or coffee. Overall, we felt that the castle offered more than many other, better known, historical exhibits.

This castle is well worth a visit for its beautiful Gothic construction upon older and more venerable foundations. It is in some ways similar to Castle Neuschwanstein, with fairy tale qualities and excellent carvings from the mythical beasts crowning the railings to the main staircase in the inner courtyard to the shield-holding dwarf carved out of a bannister leading to the smoking room.

The present castle is largely a modern construction, being extensively rebuilt between 1878 and 1893, in a style called Neo-Romantic Gründerzeit.

The entrance fee is €6 and I recommend paying an extra €2.50 for the audio tour which is well worth the money. A visit to the outer courtyard, with excellent views over the former gardens and Harz hills, is free. On a clear day you can see all the way to the Brocken.

I would suggest at least a couple of hours for a proper tour before you then enjoy one of the cafes for some refreshment. The one outside the castle has a bigger and better menu with superb views from its glass annex.

Fantastic views, and well worth the 6euro entrance fee. You get the views without paying, but the inside of the castle is brilliant. And get the audio guide for 2.50. The little train also goes up to the castle if you don't fancy the walk. Allow at least 2 hours.

The Castle on top of a hill with a beautiful view presents a self-guided tour in English or German, and I suspect in just about any other language you might desire....especially the Europeans. What made this castle stand out is it's foreboding position on the top of the highest hill in the region. Dark and Stormy nights came to mind as I was walking up the steep road towards the top. Oh yes....if you don't like steep hikes there is a tram to get you there. The self-guided tour was reasonably priced and the tour narration was recorded. The electronic narration had a 5 Euro deposit which I got back at the end of the tour. If you enjoy German history, the "royal family" was active in the Kaiser Reich, enjoying a high position within the Kaiser's hierarchy. Basically the construction looked Gothic, at least to me. If you're in the Harz Mountain Region this attraction is worth the walk. Also stop in the Market Square of Wernigerode and see the old Rathaus. It has two spires and the attractive wooden fronts typical of German construction. Four Stars for Wernigerode!
