This is a really great experience - even for non train-spotters like me! The journey up and back would be great for kids. The views are fantastic, make sure you have a camera to hand!

Great day out, however, the weather went from bright sunshine at Drei Annen Hohne to cold wet sleet on the top of the Brocken (and then back to bright sunshine on the way back down).
The cafe at the top of the Brocken was extremely busy, probably due to the bad weather however the journey back down was very comfortable with a hot coffee and a cake in the buffet car on the train.
Worth a trip.

The actual ride itself is pretty boring, with no views through the pine trees. It is probably better in winter, and especially when there is snow on the ground. Everything was closed when we got to Brocken - usual east german hospitality. We thought it was an expensive trip - 32 euros each for the return trip from Drie Annen Hohne. However I am a fan of steam trains, so it was a great experience!!

We took the train to the Brocken and then walked down. It was very cold at the Brocken. Be prepared for the big temperature drop between the train station and the top of the Brocken! It's a nice train ride up and walking down was also nice. They have a great trail to follow to get down (or use to go up to the Brocken). I have very fond memories of going to the Brocken and laugh every time I see the photos, because we weren't dressed appropriately!

Drove from Quedlinburg, boarded in Winegarode. The train ride to the summit takes more than an hour but the journey is a pleasant one. Nice views all round, cafes and crowds at the top. We then walked down to the village of Schierke, about 10K, but the path is an easy one (if not always well sign-posted). You then catch the train from Schierke back to Wienergarode. There is an excellent brats & beer cafe at Schierke station. Total time required --- five to six hours. Obviously, pick a nice day!
