What an awesome place!

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed May 7, 2019
The food was great. We had the duck! The service was top notch and it was so fun to roam the castle to see the different places within. We arrived on a Sunday which meant we had to walk up to the castle with our luggage since the town was closed for the sabbath. But we Would definitely go back!

My wife and I just got back from Germany and we stayed at this hotel the night of April 24th in room 33. My wife was so impressed that she asked me to leave her there. Unfortunately she or I do not have the funds for that and we left together.

In overall quality I feel this is one of the top five hotels that I have stayed at in the world. I will share some details that made me arrive to this conclusion here.

      1. I am pretty sure that one of the owners of the hotel was serving my wife wine the night of our dinner. He was not relaxing at home, he was working and trying to make guests feel comfortable. He was also very good at making my wife feel welcome.

      2. I bought a book about the history of the castle in the gift shop, and the writer of the book was the one in the gift shop who sold us the book. He is also a member of a family who is intimately connected to the history of the castle.

      3. The style of the rooms gives the impression that every corner of the castle was meticulously decorated. I usually do not care or notice these things, but the decorating here made a positive impression on me.

      4. Most of the rooms I stayed at in Germany were too hot for my liking at night, this has been consistent every time I have traveled to Germany, as I now feel that Germans in general like inside areas more warm than I do. Even in five star hotels, the air conditioning has been mostly ineffective at getting the room to a temperature that my wife and I like to sleep at, which is generally around 68/20 degrees. I have found that the best air conditioning in Germany appears to be the breeze coming of the Rhine river into our room at this hotel. We could make the temperature nearly perfect for our liking with the windows in our room, something that we could not successfully do at other hotels. Now keep in mind that this was only April that we stayed here, so I am not sure how it would be in the summer without air conditioning.

      5. This hotel's grounds were a surprise in their beauty. I like the wildlife friendly garden as opposed to the completely manicured versions that I have seen at some German palaces.

I don't usually write hotel reviews to be honest unless I feel I have to warn other travelers about something that was advertised incorrectly or a glaring worng about the hotel. I wrote this review however because I thought it would be improper not to recognize an outlier in excellence when I come across it in my travels.

My wife and I stayed here April 10-12, 2019 in rooms 23 and 34 - we intended to stay one night but enjoyed it so much, we stayed a second night. I was expecting the rooms to be sort of cheesy, but they have so much character with amazing views of the Rhine and the city (Oberwesel). We couldn't have been happier. We had dinner in the restaurant the first night and were amazed! The food was excellent (5-star chef quality) and the service was superb. They remembered everything we liked about the first night and offered some of the same things the second night. The restaurant reserves tables for their guests whether they know you are dining with them or not! They don't book tables to outside guests unless occupancy is low enough and they know they have availability (unlike Roomers in Baden-Baden). The staff is friendly and called us by our names - its personal and genuine attention to detail that counts!

Room tip: I don't think you can go wrong with any room here. Really cool place with awesome service.

My daughter and I stayed in the Castle Hotel in July 2017. It was really nicely kept, the room was large and comfortable, and the views were stunning.

The food was really good too.

If you opt for a room with the view of the Rhine, there’s a bit of noise from the train below. But its well worth it for one of the most amazing hotel to views you’ll ever have the chance to enjoy.

One of my best memories occurred at Auf Schoenburg. Our room had a back door that led to the castle wall. There was a small bistro table and a couple of chairs. One evening I sat there, enjoying a sip of sherry that was provided in the room. Looking over the ramparts I saw a small village on the other side of the Rhein lit up in the summer evening. It was an amazing moment I will cherish my entire life.
As a hotel the property was clean, the facilities were modern and the personnel were friendly and very accommodating. It deserves an excellent rating.
Then add in the ambiance of overnighting in an actual castle (yes, most of it was redone and updated, but that made it comfortable) and you have an experience that I would recommend without reservation.
Do it! You won't be sorry.

It was a special event to spend Christmas in a Castle. The staff were kind and helpful even though you know they would have preferred to be home with family. I was a bit unsure upon arrival. We parked before the bridge, which we were not sure you should drive on, but found out you can. It was then a bit of a hike up hill through cobble paths and courtyard to get to a unassuming door for the entrance to reception. Having made that, they did escort us to our room which we would never have found without a guide. They kindly delivered our luggage to the room. The room was extraordinary. Sherry and sparkling wine awaited. Spectacular views. Comfortable accommodations. Good food for breakfast and dinner. The path to town is a rough path, but we are use to hiking, so wear good boots. We were treated like welcome guests. Wonderful experience.
