Can Torras rural retreat
Reviewed July 30, 2012

After travelling until after midnight what a delight to arrive at Can Torras! When we awoke the following morning we were greeted by a fantastic view of the Gavarres from our window and a stunning breakfast prepared by our genial host Karen and eaten under the pergola in the warmth of the sun. Both the view and the breakfasts retained their high quality throughout our stay. With extremely helpful advice and information from Karen and David the next five days were spent discovering more delights of Can Torras and the surrounding area - and what delights they were. Can Torras has everything needed for a complete relaxing break away from the hurly burly and for us a real highlight was the evening meal followed by a dip in the hot spa watching the stars come out. Once down the hill the wider area is full of interest. As we discovered this ranges from visits to the unspoilt coastal villages of the Costa Brava through to the historical delights of old town Girona. We are certainly looking forward to returning to Can Torras to discover more!

This is the perfect place to decompress after a long-haul flight! The process begins as soon as you leave the highway at Quart, not far from Girona airport, then start winding your way up the hillside through the charming cork oak forest. The view of the distant mountains from the garden of Can Torras is mesmerizing at any time of day, and especially dramatic in the minutes before a thunderstorm, when dozens of swifts slice their way through the air before vanishing entirely. Here you are close to the varied attractions of Catalunya, whether you are seeking culture and history or sand and sea, with the advantage of being able to retreat from the heat and the madding crowd at the end of the day and chill out in the hammock with a glass of wine and an absorbing book. Not to mention the gourmet meals (served al fresco under the pergola) and engaging conversation provided by your gracious hosts, Karen and David. A real find.

We had a wonderful week at Can Torras, it was a great start to our first family holiday as three. Some say holidays with a baby is normal liife In a more challengin environment but not at Can Torras. We left feeling rested and treated. The location in the hills was peaceful, after a morning on the beach we enjoyed reading in the hammocks in the middle of the day while our baby slept. We stayed in the cottage suit which gave us ample of room. As if all that wasn't enough the food was incredible, breakfast and a three course dinner under the pergola was great. A wonderful variety of meals, including some home comforts as well as lots of new flavours. Everything was so fresh and portions were very generous. Thank you so much for looking after us so well.

Pleasure meeting you guys and I missed my morning wave to Martha next day. Perhaps she can come again when she is a bit bigger and help collect the eggs for her tortilla!

We stayed at Can Torras for 2 reasons. The first being that we had rented out our own home and were not returning to Holland. The second being our interest in ECO and the runnings of a home and business on a sustaining level. No pesticides, water management, fair treatment of animals, etc. Our dog was welcome and we were pleased with the size of the accommodation and the kindness of our hostess Karen. She serves great breakfasts and is very attentive. We definitely would recommend Can Torras to anyone looking for an interesting place to stay.

Room Tip: We slept in the annex with our dog Jake. It was clean and had everything needed to make a warm drink...

Our family (from Mississippi and Reading, UK) stayed at Can Torras near Quart (south of Girona) in the Costa Brava area of Catalon/Spain for a week (April 2012). Can Torras is located at the top of a small mountain in the midst of a cork forest. Karen and David, the owners, are from England and have lived in Catalon for 12 years. The B&B has been in operation for 3 years. Karen and David were very friendly and most helpful in all regards. Our four year old granddaughter took an immediate liking to Karen. Karen recommended beaches and sights and restaurants, and all were right on the mark. The rooms were 80 and 100 euros per night with a week discount available. My son and family had the comfortable suite with extra room for the two small children. My wife and I had the upstairs bedroom with terrific view. We were the sole visitors since there are only two rooms. Everything was nicely decorated and the bathrooms were well equipped and spacious. We ate dinner in house each night, since we wanted to put the children to bed and then be able to visit and enjoy dinner. Wine started to pour before dinner. Dinners were wonderful (20 euros per person including wine). The emphasis was on organic from the garden and Catalon dishes. It is always great to experience new dishes prepared in the local tradition. Breakfast was sumptuous with excellent choice. We all enjoyed ourselves immensely and we recommend Can Torras in the highest terms.

This was our first stop in Spain as we drove down to the Costa Blanca last year. We were met by Karen and David with a very warm welcome and two lovely dogs. I am not a dog person but they won me over immediately. We stayed in the delightful annex and ate our evening meal and breakfast under the pergola, looking out at the mountains. It was perfect. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. We could not recommend it highly enough. We are hoping to stay there again this year.

We spent a happy five days with Karen and family in August and would highly recommend it. Very close to Girona airport (20 minutes by car) but in a quiet, secluded location with a large and beautifully decorated cottage all to ourselves, it was the perfect place to spend a quiet few days. The breakfasts are great - lots of fresh fruit with different savoury and sweet dishes and on the one night we had dinner it was beautiful too. The views are impressive, the area is lovely (Baynoles lake is a 30 min drive and a great place for a walk/swim) and Karen and David were lovely, warm and welcoming hosts. Thanks for a memorable stay, D&B
