We spent a long weekend in the Alpenhof in October. The hotel is a large 4 star superior hotel on the edge of Oberstdorf woth views across the meadows (dependant on room) to the mountains. The hotel has a gym and swimming pool and all the other accoutriments one would expect in this type of establishment. The rooms were of adequate size, although the bathroom was a little on the small size and poorly laid out. We booked through booking.com and location was not an option. The room we had was on the ground floor with a small terrace that overlooked the carpark and although advertised with mountain views, this was over the roofs of adjacent hotels. The down side for us were the staff, without exception none of them smiled and whilst not discourteous it was as if we were there to make their lives difficult.
Breakfast was the usual German fare with the numerous options in which to indulge, from healthy fruit salad to eggs and bacon if you so wished.
The biggest disapointment was the unexpected additions to the bill which my wife paid and I was unaware of until after we had left.
This is the first time I have satyed in a hotel in Oberstdorf where I have been charged for the use (or in our case none use )of the Allwa card. A discount card which allows free local bus travel, reductions on cable cars etc. This was presented to us on arrival with no indication that there was a charge, additionally a sum of €13.60 was added to the bill for the restaurant which we only used at breakfast time and which was inclusive in the cost. All in all a good weekend as always in Oberstdorf, saw the first snow of the winter, but certainly wont be seeing the inside of the Alpenhof again. The are better, cheaper and more pleasant hotels to stay in.
