Sometimes hotels do themselves a disservice when they raise expectations that they can't meet.
We intentionally paid the extra euros for a superior room at what was advertised as a four-star hotel. The front desk staff exchanged the first room we were first given (on the ground floor facing the garden so that anyone walking by could look in) for a room on the third floor with a small balcony and some privacy. The room was small, the bath functional. But the corridors were badly in need of refurbishing, were dark, and reminded us more of a hospital with a medicinal smell.
Having to pay for internet is aggravating, so we’re either not going to use it or we’re going to start choosing hotels that don’t charge. And charging for bathrobes seems a bit cheap – either don’t offer them or take the four-star status seriously and offer them free-of-charge.
Distance to the center of town is a forty-minute walk (if you walk fast) or a ten-minute taxi ride (bus service is infrequent). The hotel is located in a quiet residential part of Goslar, which some guests might appreciate. Two large groups arrived just after we did; and when we returned late in the evening, a loud party in the bar was still going on. We didn’t hear anything, however, in our room.
Breakfast was the average buffet fare. In retrospect we would’ve done better by trying one of the cafes in town – but again there’s the distance to keep in mind.
The staff were very friendly and helpful both at check-in and check-out. But we’d definitely choose a hotel in the center of this charming historic city next time. According to what we heard from other guests at hotels right on the central market square, the prices are comparable.
