I pre-booked the Schlenkerla traditional Franconian meal through the Bamberg tourist office as part of the Beer Trip (which I highly recommend.)
When we arrived and figured out which part of the Brewery was the restaurant the waiting staff were rushed off their feet and it was up to us to wander around tables until I found one with my name on it.
When we sat down, our waitress was efficient and relatively friendly but very confused that I had pre-booked a vegetarian option with the tourist agency and had the details confirmed in print because they don't have one! The tomato soup was a nice starter, not amazing but good. My boyfriend had the traditional Bamberg stuffed onion in beer gravy. He found it a little dry but enjoyed it. We both had to admit that some of the food going by from the regular menu looked much tastier. I had a sweetbread with custard and raspberry for my main but it was delicious so I didn't mind. Dessert was the local cheese which most of the breweries serve which is a soft cheese mixed with onions and in some cases beer and this is served with a local heavy brown bread. This was really tasty. With limited non-meat food options in Bamerg, I ate a lot of this. It's a must eat.
Of course we had the smoked marsden beer. It was just right for the food and the staff had no problem with us staying on for over an hour after dinner having a couple of extra drinks. It was straight from the barrel and tasted delicious! Oddly we couldn't order any of the other Schlenkerla beers there although they were serving them in the other area so I had to wait to try their lighter beers. There was supposed to be a beer schnapps with the meal but it never arrived and it seemed like to much to fuss over.
The crowds were really mixed and interesting, locals and tourists. The atmosphere and your surroundings in such a beautiful old building are what you're really going for. It's an old dominican monostery, dating from 1310 and like most of Bamberg altstadt most of the original buildings are intact.
Food is okay, service is okay but the atmosphere and beer are unbeatable. It's worth going to.
