food excellent but locals with whom we had to share a table expressed surprise we were there as 'tourists'. They gave us a history of the place and its owners. Rare to be so vegetarian friendly in Bamberg.

I thought this place was really good although it did take a while for the food to come out but I think it was because it was super busy. The menu was very diverse and I believe it was mostly Asian time food but then again it was a diverse menu.

Walk into Pelikan and you will think that you are about to sit down to another Franconian style dinner with pork shoulder, potato dumplings, and sauerkraut to boot. You couldn't be more wrong. The atmosphere looks like that of a family-run gasthaus, but one look at the menu, and you'll see you're in for a Thai-inspired treat. The food is outstanding. I usually get the same thing (#31, duck in a curry sauce), but my wife gets something different every time, and we have never had anything that didn't exceed our expectations. Pelikan always has seasonal drink specials (federweisser, bockbier, Frankenwein, etc.), and often on the weekends will host theme parties to celebrate new drinks, a change in season, holidays, or anything else Franconians celebrate. I recommend making a reservation, since the restaurant only seats around 40-50 in the winter and is busy just about every night of the week. In the summer, be sure to reserve outdoor seating in the garden, which will make your experience that much better.
