“Great location, fascinating building”
Reviewed October 16, 2012

Superb location, on a sunny day unbeatable and very close to the vibrant town centre. Originally a monastry, lovely old wall murals depicting various historical incidents from Konstanz. The hotel was fine, the room garden view nothing special but correct. I would return should I have the need.

We really enjoyed our stay in this hotel. We had wonderful views over the Lake from our room. We had a frosty reception at the desk when we first arrived, which was rather offputting. Also, some of the hotel's furnishings are a little worn. Furthermore, we were disappointed we had to pay for a very indifferent wifi. Nevertheless, we really enjoyed the casual restaurant, which was warm and welcoming. The service and food were excellent. The building itself is beautiful and has an interesting history. The hotel is in an excellent location. We enjoyed our stay.

We've just returned from a week at this hotel, and found it really great in almost all respects. Our room, whilst not particularly large, was very well equipped and spotlessly clean. The breakfast buffet was extensive and regularly replenished, dinner (we were on a half-board basis) of an extremely high standard, and all the staff were efficient, helpful and pleasant.

However....... on Saturday there was a large wedding reception (200 plus) in the Festsaal, which occupies just about all of the ground and first floors of the garden wing. The noise and reverberation from the live band made the rooms in this wing just about unusable from 6.00pm until the early hours. The hotel management were obviously aware of this - they apologised beforehand and supplied every room with earplugs! Nevertheless, it really wasn't acceptable.

A great shame, because it spoiled to some extent what would otherwise have been an exceptional experience.

Room Tip: Obviously, avoid the Garden Wing if there's a wedding reception on!

We have just enjoyed a 12 night stay at this beautiful, historic hotel. Our spacious room faced the cloisters and was very peaceful. The staff were attentive and friendly and even helped us arrange some personal trips by train and bus. Nothing was too much trouble. The meals were superb, and dining on the terrace on the warm evenings was especially pleasurable. We would thoroughly recoomend this hotel.

Room Tip: Avoid the fourth floor as the lift only goes up to third floor

This hotel is right on the lakeside and just five minutes walk to the harbour and train station. The old part of the town is directly opposite the hotel and the Minster can be reached in two or three minutes. Although there is a railway line and level crossing between the hotel and the old town we did not find this a problem. The staff are some of the most pleasant we have come across and go out of their way to be helpful. Our bedroom on the third floor had air con, overlooked the garden and had recently been refurbished. During the evening the turn down service operates and leaves guests a bedtime story and a chocolate! Weddings happen most Saturdays but did not impact on the service we received. The food was excellent. The choice at dinner was limited but if you did want something different it was available. Breakfast was an extensive buffet with a pot of coffee provided or numerous teas on offer. There are many cyclists in Constance and lots of cycle tracks - free bikes are provided by the hotel. We were staying for over a week and were issued with free bus passes and half price boat passes for the BSB boats on the lake. We had a very enjoyable holiday and would happily return.

Room Tip: The lift only goes to the 3rd floor. Rooms overlooking the garden are a reasonable size and have tw...

I visit Lake constance at least once a year and have a favourite hotel I usually stay at, this time I thought I would stay at this imposing hotel for a change!
steigenberger is an old monastery and the owners has done very little to change the general feeling of glum and greyness! The lobby is long, small and lack of a doorman gives a very shabby first impression!

For a 4 star hotel, there is no luggage service and we were merely pointed towards the elevator.... very B&B!

Along the corridor there were long cocktail tables set up with a single white rose on them..... on the first day we assumed the tables were set to receive guests for a function of some sort, but by the 3rd day we realised that the random unused tables were part of the odd decor!

My room was on the top floor, 4th floor- which was essentially floor 3 and a half. This floor was an after thought of small windy corridors to what must have been a glorious previous 3rd floor ceiling and attic! 4th floor could only be accessed by stairs.... so I ha to go to the 3rd floor and then drag my nag up to flights of stairs....... I felt like the little princess locked in the attic with a very small window looking over the majestic Lake Constance!

The restaurant was very nice, sitting outside on the terrace and looking over the lake was magic, but the inside was outdated 80s faux stone in pink colours; in desperate need of being brought up into the 21st century. However, the food was lovely and the waiters were fantastic!

In case the owners or the manager of the hotel will read this, I would like to say.. please travel and stay in other hotels with similar ranking and see how these days others do not charge for internet and manage to provide a decent service for their customers. The internet at Steigenberger was prehistoric-- one had to call the front desk to ask for login details which were long 8-10 digit numbers.... the hotel gave 30 minutes free internet and then the options were, 2 hours, daily, 48 hours etc.... one could only log in from a single device which meant if two people need to use their laptops, they would have to pay for another connection... COME ON..... add a few Euros to already overpriced rooms and allow your poor customers to login at will and easily......

All in all, on my next visit to Lake constance I should be going back to my old favourite hotel and perhaps go the Steigenbeger for the Grilled Char only!

Room Tip: Dont stay on the 4th floor...

Great location, great place. Rooms well sound insulated and noise from ball rooms is not audible in the rooms.
The staff is really "Lufthansaish" - very professional and courteous but lacking willingness to bend the rules even a little bit. No dinner in the Restaurant at 2015 because the kitchen closes at 2030. No breakfast on the terrace at 0845 because the terrace opens at 0900. A hotel of this standing should not try to be only professional but also have a human touch.

Notwithstanding this "professionalism" there was no drinking water in the gym. Same for towels.
