From the outside, this hotel looks so promising and indeed our party of 3 adults stayed here. It is situated overlooking the Mosel river on the Traben side of Traben-Trarbach. It is a very beautiful building, built in the early part of the 20th century, and was once, possibly, a well run hotel but sad to say that is not the case any more as it clearly has been leased out to its present management, who are unfamiliar with the hotel buisness. Yes the rooms(we stayed in) were clean and comfortable and quiet at night but their whole character has been diminished by the addition of cheap 'modern' furniture of the 'flatpack' variety. The room we stayed in was to the front of the house and had a view of the river and a balcony, it was probably 30m2 with a 4m high ceiling with a beautiful original double bedroom doors of, probably carved teak. Our single friend's room was in the attic on the fourth floor with a view of the very untidy back yard. It was clean but small and again had characterless, particleboard furniture. The staircase in this house is original and a thing of beauty, with the a finely carved balustrade and newel posts, however it was difficult to appreciate it in all its finery in the dimly lit space. The tiny hall was being used as a temporary store for packs of toilet paper on the morning we descended the stairs for breakfast. Decor in the hall way consisted of dusty silk flowers in plastic vases and various pieces of bric-a -brac adorned the walls on each landing.
Breakfast was 'buffet' style and although an electric food warmer for hot breakfast food was sitting on the buffet table it was empty and our hostess did not mention a' cooked option' nor did we enquire. On offer was sliced cheese, some cold meats, bread rolls ,pats of butter and tiny plastic cartons of jam......
We paid 60 euros each for the B&B and left with a feeling of relief. This place needs a major shake-up. We will not be back.
