Being an converted house the rooms are all non-standard, different shapes, different corridors, lots of stairs (there is also a lift), interesting pictures on the walls, etc. The first thing I noticed about my room (#201) was the fact that the condition of the room was immaculate. Not a single dirty, worn out, marked, cracked or broken item, anywhere! The bathroom was immaculate & the shower was lovely.

The bed was very comfy & I slept like a log.

Nice breakfasts & the stables restaurant (with microbrewery!) served a gorgeous meal.

did I mention the microbrewery? ;-)

All the staff were very helpful and very polite.

Very few downsides:
* I could only get a mobile signal in the window - but what do you expect for an old house (3 ft thick walls), in a dip, in the countryside?
* There was no wireless internet in the room, instead there was an Ethernet cable to connect to the internet with. Plus the internet was free! just the way it should be given how cheap internet access is nowadays.

A taxi from Newcastle station cost £18.00 (after 11pm) & the journey during the day to Newcastle (north of the river) was around 35 minutes.

I will definitely stay here again next time I head up to Newcastle.

Stayed here for a wedding. Very nice location but expensive. Breakfast was good but not as generous as it could have been.

Our arrival at the hotel was almost a disaster. The booking agency had failed to pass on our reservation and, at 5pm, it appeared that we would have to find somewhere else to stay. The concerned receptionist telephoned the booking agency and confirmed our details. But it still did not look good until she remembered two deluxe rooms were empty because they were directly over the events room in which wedding receptions would be held on two of the three nights of our stay. We accepted and it was a bonus that we were not disturbed by revellers any night. The quality of rooms and attitiude of staff was excellent. We did find the duvet rather small and as a result suffered draughts on our backs. Breakfast was an experience of quality and quantity. The only drawback was that our route to the Eden Room traversed several flights of stairs containing 58 steps. Rooms are spread over several levels and can be several flights from facilities. Anyone who has difficulty with stairs should check the location of their room in advance. Dinner at the Stables on the Friday evening was enjoyable, with fast, efficient , friendly service and ample portions. On Saturday the restaurant, a popular venue among locals, was crowded. From being seating to service took 50 minutes. Asked about our meals the waitress told us "it will be as long as it takes". When the food arrived it had been too long on the pass and two of the meals were cold. Following a complaint the meals were taken away and when they were returned it was obvious where we had tasted the food. This led us to the conclusion that they had been reheated in a microwave instead of being replaced by fresh food. However, overall it was an enjoyable experience and we would be happy to return.

So here I am, staying at the Beamish Park Hotel, and I guess that its partly because it's midweek, and partly because it's off-season (albeit half-term), but I've ended up staying at a hotel with a lot of character for LESS than the price of a bland room in a chain hotel.

The hotel is geared to the Wedding Day market, with some amazing function rooms and beautiful grounds... and during the week "the rest of us" are allowed in!

There are clearly 2 types of room in the hotel: some are small rooms, made by dividing a very large room (the "paper-thin" walls mentioned by others), whilst others have solid walls, and are clearly bigger than your average hotel room. The good news - for me, that is - is that I'm in a "Deluxe" room, which is covered by the latter description. Room 111 has good solid walls, no noise, and overlooks the car park - but the rather elegant curtains seem to keep out the light just fine.

The room, and bathroom, were renovated about 18 months ago to a high quality (as has much of the hotel), and my room is just so different from the sort of room I would normally stay in... for a start, I have FURNITURE... you know, the stuff that's old and is made of real wood, with bits of needless trim that gives it "style". The wardrobe is huge, and stores an ironing board and iron. The bed is wooden too, with a firm, yet surprisingly comfortable, mattress.

Whilst the WiFi is only available in the public areas, there's good (and free!) wired internet available (fully operational cable in desk drawer!). Could do with a desklight though. The LCD TV, mounted above the desk, is clearly not new, and has an external Freeview box - not that I care, I'm not staying here so I can watch the TV! And yes, in room 111, it IS visible from the bed, albeit a bit of a way away!

The staff I met, at reception and at breakfast, all seem to be pretty pleasant and professional. Breakfast is in the very elegant Eden Room: full cooked breakfast is cooked to order, plus a choice of things like cereals, fruit, croissants etc

I ate the first night at "The Stables" attached pub / restaurant / micro-brewery: I was quite surprised how busy it was, considering it's a Tuesday. My lamb-shank was adequate (not as much flavour as I expected) but came well presented with a good sized dish of fresh vegetables. I didn't go for a desert, but I did have an excellent pint of beer from the on-site brewery.

If you want to eat away from the hotel, then don't bother with Stanley - there's hardly anything there - instead go over to Chester-le-Street, or even Washington / Gateshead, they are not far away.

Summary: A bit of style at a very reasonable price.
