“Isadore's Restaurant Silver Star Resort, B.C.”

Just back from Silver Star. Silver Star is a great resort and geared largely toward families. Many good, casual restaurants with excellent food and great service. However caution when visiting Isadore's restaurant. The food can be quite good but the Owner (often dressed in traditional Swiss garb) is not friendly to young children and families which is disconcerting, particularly because it is a family resort. We had two particularly poor experiences were in we were made to feel we were in the wrong place and unwelcome, despite the fat we have well behaved children who are experienced with the a restaurant environment. This proprietor may be operating in the wrong resort. Suggestion: avoid if you have children. Strongly recommend Silver Grill which is a more upscale restaurant and is very family freindly, notwithwithstanding a more intimate and somewhat more opulent environment.

“Allora...Wine Bar and Restaurant”
Reviewed December 14, 2009

Visited Silver Star this past weekend and had a great night at Allora, the new wine bar and restaurant. The place is warm and inviting, the wine list exciting and the menu varied and interesting. We had the black been soup which was so good, the Spanish Mussels were fresh and tasty and the Prawns were delicious with a tomato and feta sauce. Never had them like that before, and really enjoyed them. Perfect for after a hard day skiing, and loved the great prices on the local wines.

“A family tradition”
Reviewed November 23, 2009

Fabulous ski resort for families, catering to wide variety of ages and ski abilities. My extended family meets in Vernon for a Christmas week of skiing every year, and there's a range of abilities, beginning preschoolers to advanced adults.

The ski school is great, very professional and friendly instruction. Their kids centre is particularly strong. Lessons begin at age 3 at the tiny bunny hill / magic carpet area right in front of the daycare, and all part of an enclosed area for security. There's a bigger magic carpet and a slope completely dedicated to green runs with its own chair for the next step up. The front face is a very accessible combination of green/blue/black runs, which means as soon as kids can ride the chair, the whole family can ski the same mountain together.

The village is a very pretty place, and nicely laid out so that it feels like there's definitely a town centre where it's easy to meet people. Lots of restaurants and stores with good ski gear and neat toys, and of course the all important candy store for the apres-ski treat purchase for the kids. Restaurants range from OK to pretty good. The food is generally a step up from the horrible cafeteria style catering you see at many big mountain resorts. More on the level of pub fare, and sometimes quite a bit better than that. (I particularly recommend the Paradise Ranch lodge at the top of the Powder Gulch chair - great gourmet burgers & mixed green salad. You can't get fries there, but they have yummy cinnamon buns).

The skiing is extremely enjoyable, if not world class. (Experts will likely prefer the challenges at the new billion-dollar Revelstoke resort nearby.) Tons of powder (last year we got 80 cm over 3 nights, but the days dawned magically clear). The front face has long, steady runs with lots of trees for shelter, although the top is no fun in white-out conditions. When the snow is blowing, however, seek refuge at Silver Woods, which also has some nice cruisers and moguls, but it's quieter and more sheltered. The most challenging skiing is in the Putnam Creek area, with plenty of double diamonds and the occasional blue and a single green for those who took a wrong turn. Lineups are practically non-existent here, and pretty minimal at Silver Woods.

There's tons of apres ski activities, as well as tubing and skating. But we've never had a chance to stay to enjoy them as family have property in the area where we stay. Nevertheless, it's extremely tempting.

“Great Family Hill”
Reviewed August 21, 2009

We have been to Silverstar 10 times in the last 10 years and have had a a great time each visit. We are advid skiers and love the atmosphere. There are accomodtions for all price levels yet the food could be improved. There is a new up-scale grill for dinner which is nice, a great breakfast / lunch spot but there could be a little more variety. The ski runs have something for all levels. Both my children have learned to ski at the ski school and have both become great skiers. We happily make the trip from California each year for the great location, snow and fun!

“Beautiful scenery, Good accomodations”
Reviewed January 17, 2009

We stayed 2 nights at the Vance Creek property. The kitchen was amazingly equipped with all you would need, down to serving spoons. We should have brought more to prepare food ourselves. The only complaint was in the bathroom the hot/cold was reversed. We aren't skiiers, but we were visiting with family. The road up is not for the faint of heart. We went tubing and on the snowshoe adventure - which was amazing. They have snowshoe or carriage rides to a remote cabin for dinner, wish we had done that. It was clear so you got a beautiful vision everytime you went outside. Lots of skiiers & boarders, and they all seemed to enjoy themselves. We would definitely return.
