“Great location and amenities”
Reviewed February 20, 2014

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights in a studio. Great access to the both downhill and cross country trails. Very good amenities with convenient ski lockers, communal outdoor hot tub, and a nice studio kitchen with fridge, microwave, toaster and coffee maker.

Our only complaint would be that since the studios are lock off units connected to a 1 bedroom unit, there is a lot of transfer of noise through the connecting door. Also the blinds are more of a privacy blind than room darkening so the room stays quite bright at night. For this reason, we would choose a different unit next time.

Room Tip: Higher floors are nice since many rooms are on the parking lot or along the walking path.

Our family of 4 (kids age 12 and 14) stayed at the Fire Light Lodge for 5 nights. When we made the reservation, the accommodation where we stayed for the last 5 years was fully booked so we reserved in what we thought would be the “next best place” in town/village.

We came to Fire Light with an open mind and will provide pros & cons from the perspective that we stayed in “better” accommodation at Silver Star:

PROS:

• Fantastic location IF you’re planning to go to the skating pond and/or Tube Park. The overall location of Fire Light Lodge is probably best for… families with young kids who may not ski all day long? Otherwise, the rest of us are walking, pretty much everywhere. Still better than driving, though!

• We loved having the bowling right next door, but it's a been strange to have decided to go with 10-pin bowling in a location that is more suited to young kids… 5-pins would have been more appropriate, but this worked well for us (and the staff was awesome).

• Very new, clean and modern. Our 2-bedrooms, 2-bathrooms condo had a great layout for our family, with the bedrooms separated by a spacious living room/dining room/kitchen. Beautiful vaulted ceiling in our unit and gorgeous view of the pond. The noise was not an issue for us, looking at other reviews, although the hotel was full over the week-end - albeit we were on the 4th floor.

• Customer service is simply top notch! Everybody was very helpful and went out of his/her way to accommodate our requests (usually for more kitchen equipment).

• Internet connection is awesome – reliable and fast (best we’ve seen in Silver Star so far). Good high definition TV in the living room.

• The entrance is really well set up with cubbies for ski gear AND boot heaters (impressive, a first for us). First time we’ve seen this kind of layout and it worked great.

• Similarly, there are no closets but the “open air” hangers worked well (hard to describe here, but the storage is very functional, that’s what we mean).

• Good size ski locker with open top (cool!) for longer skis.

CONS:

• This is not really a “true” ski-in/ski-out location. The only way to “ski-out” is to put on your skis at the back door and push up the hill (a bit) to the Silver Queen (slow and thankfully short) chair. Then you have to cat track to the Comet Express chair or stay in Silverwoods (with no easy way out, I’m afraid).

• Want to come back home for lunch? Go to the Village, walk or push through said Village, walk through the parking lot… or… find a way back up Comet, ski down the wind swept slopes of Alpine Meadows, push on the overpass, take off your skis, walk through the parking lot and walk down two sets of stairs. Wow, my arms are so sore from carrying my skis all over, I might just switch to cross-country!

• OMG, the washer-dryer combo machine drove us INSANE! First, we marveled at the concept and watched it in awe, sitting on the toilet and wondering about the millions that we could have made, have we thought about this concept first. But then… the novelty quickly wore off as we realized that one load of laundry takes HOURS to complete, the maximum load of 8 pounds (man, where’s the scale to weigh my laundry?!) did not get cleaned very well, the color ran on a favorite white shirt (washing with… old clothes in cold water?!). Want to give up? Forget it: your laundry is committed, there is NO WAY to get that door to open.

• Bottom line on the washer-dryer combo: it’s a good concept, but maybe not in a condo unit where families will stay with expected loads of dirty, smelly laundry… we left with dirty, smelly clothes, thanking our karma of not having thought about this concept first, which would have certainly left us to bankruptcy.

• Did you know that the only thing you CANNOT get at the Fire Light Lodge is, ironically, matches? In order to fuel our chocolate fondue, we could not find a match or lighter in the place anywhere – and that is the ONLY thing that stumped the wonderful staff. We made a plea to our teenagers to run to the nearby bonfire at Tube Town for a “Quest for Fire”, but nobody took up the challenge: we raced through that chocolate like you wouldn’t believe before it solidified under our forks, which wasn’t such a bad thing after all.

• Yep, there are still no mats or carpets in the entrance and, honestly, who would want their lovely hardwood floors tracked with wet, ski boots?! This would be such an easy fix… in the mean time, we just left all our boots in the hallway.

• Both my husband and I got a bleeding kiss from the sharp corners of the master bed: bumper pads? Duct tape? If the bed looks good, it doesn’t feel so good when it’s gauging through skin.

• Drying racks would be a great addition to any “ski condo” where lots of clothes can’t go in the dryer (don’t get me started on the laundry again) – but we managed, this is not a big deal.

• A step stool would be necessary to reach all the high cubbies, kitchen cupboards and storage in the bedrooms. At 5’2”, “I” certainly couldn’t reach ANY of these. Nothing that a 6’2” husband and/or 5’10” son couldn’t fix, but still… I would like to be independent without ruining the nice leather chairs in the dining room!

• As for most places we have rented in the past, a strainer for the kitchen sink would be recommended. Not sure what people are always putting down there (folks, are you doing this at home, too?!), but the magnificent huge kitchen sink is often plugged :-(

• No fitness centre here (again, a nice to have that you… well, can have somewhere else at in Silver Star…). The common hot tub can get noisy, probably because our unit was just above it, but there is "quiet time" at Fire Light and this was just fine in terms of noise from outside (hot tub, skating pond or Tube Town).

Room Tip: Go on the top (fourth) floor facing the pond.

Our group of 4 (two couples) stayed in Room 406 which overlooked the pond/skating rink. This was a spacious 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom unit with high ceilings. The Firelight is well located just a short walk across a parking lot to the lifts and an easy ski-in by coming down over the bridge at the bottom of the Alpine Meadows chair. What we liked best was the cubicles at the entranceway where each person could stash their gear. Also, the rooms had open closets with floating shelving. This is the best design I've seen in a ski condo. Too many places have tiny closets with no storage and then they have doors that open into the already small rooms. Very well thought out. I've stayed in many ski condos and this is the best layout yet.

The kitchen was well stocked with utensils and cutlery. The clothes washer/dryer was a european style single unit that both washed and dried. It is small and a full cycle takes very long. The furnishings were very comfortable but the beds were not the best. A king bed would have been nice in the master. The second bedroom had a double single bunk which isn't the best for a couple. Window coverings are opaque but do not block out light at all. The living room was very spacious but could've used an area rug. The high ceilings and laminate floors were not great for acoustics or warmth.

The checkin staff and manager were very friendly and helpful.

Wifi was fast and free.

Overall a great stay. Only drawback was the lack of snow during our stay and the SERIOUS dearth of food options on the hill.

No criticisms at all. To complain about this place there would be something wrong with you. Reasonably priced, great location, well appointed apartments, friendly staff, very family friendly resort, lots for the kids to do in addition to the skiing. Ice skating and tube town near the pond was a lot of fun. You won't find any snow making facilities at silver star. This is a good thing as the snow is plentiful and dry. It's not ritzy like aspen which I like. No Gucci or Prada stores. It is very good value in my opinion. Lovely ski instructors. Ask for Steve T. He was very good and a lovely chap.

This was the best location for our family to access all the amenities and fun filled activities that silver star offers during the winter season. We arrived to a welcoming smile from front office staff and parking close enough that we could unload all the items needed for skiing. We stayed in the corner unit which was a 2 bedroom with a wonderful kitchen, living room and fireplace. The couch pulled out into a double bed. There was a a full kitchen. This location is close to tube town and over looks the pond for fabulous views. Its a short walk to the village. There is a hot tub that is clean located on the first floor. There is no ice machine so prepare for that.

Room Tip: Rooms on the corner facing the pond may be loud when machines are grooming the hills and clearing th...

Firelight is one of the newest accommodations on the mountain. There are several types of rooms to choose from. We took the most basic which is a studio suite. It had a kitchenette which included a fridge (no freezer), sink, microwave, coffee maker, kettle, toaster, and blender. For cutlery and dishes there were a few plates, bowls, can opener, cutting board, corkscrew (woohoo!), wine glasses, mugs, water glasses, and typical cutlery. Everything we needed to have breakfast and few lunches in our room. The bed was king sized and the bathroom is very clean and spacious. There are no real closets but hooks to hang clothes on but there are drawers.

Overall the space is perfect for a couple staying a few days. The location is great. Right by tube town and brewers skating pond with easy access to the hill and easy walking distance to the village. There is also underground parking, hot tub, and a bowling alley attached.

Things to be mindful of:

1. The walls are paper thin and you can always here your neighbours when they are in their rooms.

2. The floors are laminate and you can hear heavy footed guests above

3. The blinds are not blackouts. They are fairly transparent and if you are a light sleeper the morning light may wake you. Also you can see the street lamps through them. Black out curtains would be heaven sent! Speaking of light the fridge also has an on light that is very bright and I had to cover it with tape in order to sleep otherwise it shone right in my eyes

4. There is no entrance mat and I find this strange because the floor will have puddles from your ski boots when you come in after a day on the slopes. I found this puzzling and annoying.

5. Last but not least when our room was serviced we found they did not vacuum or sweep the floors and we could feel the dirt that had been tracked through because we didn't have a front door mat.

These points are not to deter you from an otherwise lovely place to stay. Just to make you aware. I would stay again despite these oddities.

Room Tip: Top floor would be best facing the pond

Booked a three bed, two bath suit (with private hot tub) for a girls weekend/wedding. Suite was clean, fully stocked and beautifully furnished. Off-season rates were fantastic and location would be perfect during the winter ski season. One tip: there's not much for grocery shopping on mountain during the summer, so be sure to stock up in Kelowna/Vernon before heading up :)
