Reviewed January 11, 2009

My family and I are spending two weeks at Chateau on the Ridge, a condo complex at Big White in BC. It is conveniently located next to the Perfection run (blue) and a short walk up the hill to the main Village Centre. I booked the condo six months ago through The Lodging Company. We have a condo with 2 bedroom plus den. There is good storage for coats boots etc in the foyer (which we only discovered when the repairman came for the dryer). From the living area and kitchen, there is a view out onto the ski run. The sofas are comfy and the gas fire is great. After that, things aren't quite so good. There is only one bathroom which is poky and the celling fan is falling out of the ceiling. The mattresses and pillows are all very lumpy and uncomfortable and the linen clean but very worn. In the bedrooms, there is no room for bedside tables (or even one on one side of the queen bed in the master room) and storage is limited in the bedrooms.

The condos are meant to be fully equipped but when we arrived, there was a small and mottly selection of crockery, cutlery and glassware and the cooking equipment was very shabby. There were not enough bowls for us to all have cereal for breakfast and only half of the four slice toaster worked. Luckily I made a call to the lovely and friendly local rental agent (from Condos Unlimited - not the Lodging Company) and she replaced all this the very next day. She also fixed doorknobs onto the hall cupboard, so that we could open the doors easily!

The worst feature about Chateau on the Ridge is the NOISE. Our unit (203) is located on the walk-in level from the car park. The corridors are bare concrete and our bedrooms (which for some strange reason all have external doors with window to the corridor) are incredibly noisy as people clump past them in their ski boots! Also, the Lodging Company, sent me a plan of the building which shows our accommodation occupying the entire floorspace in our section of the building. In fact, the back couple of rooms have been partitioned off by a piece of chipboard (there is a wardrobe in front of it) and the Back two rooms are rented out separately (usually to staff who work on the mountain). There is no sound insulation and when they are there it sounds as if they are in our bedroom with us! Upstairs, is a family who own their condo and have four small children who thump around all day and night, jumping off the furniture and yelling and screaming. I spoke to the building manager about the noise, He was sympathetic but unhelpful, saying that yes, the noise transmission in the building is terrible and always been a problem. He did offer to speak to the staff member behind us, but otherwise his advice was to put up with it and book a top floor condo next time!

Obviously, as all the condos are privately owned, it depends on your luck what you get, but if you are thinking about staying here, grill the booking agent, stay in a top floor apartment and good luck.

Dear Ecossienne,

Thank you for sharing your review with the travel community, we really appreciate your feedback.

I realize your review pertains to a visit in 2009 but I wanted to let you know that there are several well appointed condos in Chateau on the Ridge managed by Central Reservations. When you book with us we make a real effort to ensure your vacation is comfortable and enjoyable. I can assure you that the standards for our rental properties are much higher than the property you have described here.

I hope you have returned to Big White since this visit. We would love to be your hosts!
