“Don't miss it!”

An unique experience! The huge underground city is full of history and good old survival technics. Highly recommended to go with a good guide, to avoid getting lost and understand what and how every room was being used. The Christians lived here for a long time and the daily livelihood were well planned, designed and built. Once you surfaced, plenty of souvenir shops, snack and fruit drink stalls to enhance your spirits. Definitely a place to visit in Cappadocia!

“OK if you are in the area-don't make a special trip”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 11, 2013

What you will actually see is narrow stone tunnels and steps that go down the equivalent of about 5 stories. There are also 'rooms'--but nothing to actually see besdides more areas carved out of stone. The entrance fee, 15 TL per person is OK, but if you want to know what you are looking at, the 'guide' charges extra--he started at 30 TL per person, but when we said we weren't interested, he offered a "special price" of 20 TL per person. We truly weren't interested, since we planned to look up the history and other details in Wikipedia later on, so we didn't take him up on it. I am a tall woman (5' 9") and there were several places where it was somewhat awkward to walk crouched over, in order to not hit one's head. Also requires some stamnia to walk up and down several stairs bent over. This is not a good spot for a claustrophobe--there are several places where two people cannot pass one another, and anyone wanting to exit quickly would be in trouble. It has a long history, apparently going back 4,000 years, the guard volunteered, and includes some period where it was used by Christians. But no evidence of anything like that is visible. There are the usual vendors outside: carpets, knick-knacks, cafe, restaurant.

Love every bit of this place. So fascinated by the historical bit of it , about how advanced the people in the past were. can't believe I felt so excited crawling through narrow dark tunnels.

“Superb - never seen before”

Very unique destination. An underground city to imagine how people stayed there in the past. It showed how people at that time thought about all the important things in the past.Well-built city and a must see destination

“Sobering Experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 20, 2013

It was sobering to learn that Christians lived in the Underground city mostly in the dark with animals present to be protected from the persecutors. There is a nice souvenier shop on site.
