“Great chalet”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 21, 2013

We went in December in the first week of the season. We were expecting teething troubles but actually had very few. The staff were friendly and engaging and did a great job coping with the first week of guests (it was a full chalet as well).
We have been a few times with Esprit and we like their childcare approach and their reps are always fun and good with the kids. The rooms in Chalet Corniche were actually slightly nicer than some of the chalets in the past (I think this is a hotel in the summer) so the rooms were all a decent size and had a proper wardrobe. Cleaning was done to a good standard (and with fun touches in the kids rooms e.g. arranging the teddy bears every day). As it is also a hotel - there is bit of a faff as you need keycards to access the rooms so if the kids got up in the night they often locked themselves out (we always kept one of the cards to their room in ours so it was not a problem). There was a listening service on each floor every night so we were not concerned about security (and in fact felt more secure as the doors actually locked unlike many chalets in the past)

We have just come back from a fantastic trip to Tigne and a lovely stay at Chalet Corniche. The staff were all really helpful and great fun. They looked after us really well. Our kids all loved them. Food was good, wine was plentiful, rooms were clean etc.

I am so glad I did not read some of the earlier reviews as I would have been pretty worried about the holiday. All in all our party was really happy.

Had a great group holiday with friends, the chalet has great views of the slopes and is only five minutes walk to the main meeting area and lifts.
Unfortunately for us Esprit experience was fairly average, food was ok but never on time and any small issues we had throughout the week were not really dealt with apart from removing one of the childcare staff who was pretty horrible to the smaller children, maybe we suffered from going in January whilst they found their feet, looks like things have improved which is great.
The steam and jacuzzi down stairs was a great addition, rooms were ok but as the staff never locked up downstairs we had a few security worries and had to lock our children in the rooms at night.
No problems with the chalet just felt the esprit service was poor and would not rush to use them again if they can't get it right from the first month of the season and have to wait for complaints to get it right.

Wanted to pass on our experience of Chalet Corniche as it does not fit in with the reviews below.

From arrival to departure we encountered nothing but helpfulness from all the Esprit staff whether they be the chalet hosts or kids reps etc. If you are expecting 5* treatment and surroundings maybe this is not the place / company for you, but if you are looking for friendly, cosy, comfortable, clean, safe surroundings for you and your family then this is the place.

Nothing was to much trouble for any of the staff, the kids had a brilliant time in ski lessons and kids clubs, and the kids dinner went down very well. The food at night for the adults I would describe as good, maybe not quite restaurant standards but it was always filling and tasty, and the free wine was more than drinkable.

The location, furnishings and standard of the chalet were all excellent, and I would return without question. Either the place has improved beyond all recognition to the reviews below, or they had unreasonable requirements. Only slight negative would be a bit more storage in the rooms would have been useful.

Special mention must go to Ellie and the other chalet hosts, and Will and others at kids club.

We stayed in Chalet Corniche recently and were very impressed with both the chalet and the attentiveness of the chalet staff.

We'd never been on a catered ski holiday with our two small children before and were a bit apprehensive. We needn't have been. The experience with Ski Esprit was excellent, from our arrival (which was a bit hectic but we had just had a 2 hour coach transfer) until the very early morning of our departure.

The staff seemed to be there for virtually all our needs, nothing seemed to be too much trouble. I suppose some seemed young but I kept imagining what my two would be like doing the same job in future...it's hard work trying to please so many people all the time - and they did continually keep us pleased. We were able to totally relax about the childcare during the day even with the minor issues my son has, I was regularly consulted on the menu to make sure I was happy with the options. The daily diary they do for the children is excellent too, a great keepsake for me if not them!

The afternoon cakes were superb (mainly polished off by me), and while the portion sizes for the evening meal could possibly have been bigger, we felt the food was tasty & presented well. The baby listening service was the icing on the cake. To relax during a meal on holiday has been unheard of for a few years and we were able to manage it for a full 6 evenings in a row thanks to Ski Esprit.

Our children aren't old enough to ski so I can't speak for the ski school, but the skiing and location of the chalet for us was superb, no faffing around on and off buses as we've done on other holidays.

All in all, we'd thoroughly recommend to friends and family.

When I read one of these reviews just before our holiday I was horrified but I'm pleased to say that our experience was very different. Ski Esprit had clearly taken on board the feedback and made some changes to the staff in the chalet.

The chalet is very nice and spacious and just across the road from the nursery slope. For an experienced skier the chalet is virtually ski in/ ski out. If there had been fresh snow on the road my husband would have made us all ski to the boot room!

The rooms are nice but very hot, we turned off all the radiators when we arrived and still seemed to roast every night. We made this comment to the staff who in turn asked the owners to turn the underfloor heating down. The key cards for the rooms were irritating as I snapped mine in my pocket just bending over and for many rooms there weren't 2 available. It would have been nice if the towels had been changed mid week.

The staff were polite and friendly. The Chef was new from a different chalet and the cakes in the afternoon were lovely. It was really nice being able to make tea and coffee throughout the day.

Some of our party had stayed in a Ski Total chalet the year before and said the food was not as good but I thought it was fine and although the babies portions were small there was more available if we asked.

What made the holiday for me was the childcare staff. They arrived at 8.15 in the morning and loaded the babies into double buggies to take them to the nursery. It's a long walk to the nursery and it was bitterly cold. They could have done with a few more blankets to bundle them up in.

A Snow Ranger took the majority of the children in our group off to beginners ski lessons and stayed with them throughout their lesson. On a few days when our daughter was less than enthusiastic about going to ski school they swept her up with the others and when we spied on them a few minutes later from the balcony I could see that she was fine and singing along with the others.

It's about a five minute walk for the little ones in their ski boots to the ski school meeting point but you never have to carry their skis. There is quite a steep slope for them to negotiate as the pavement is buried in snow which isn't ideal. If you ski with them in the afternoon a driver comes to the chalet and scoops up all the skis to make sure they are in the right place for the morning. Two afternoons our five year old went to snow club and had a great time.

Paying for supervised lunch is a great idea and gives you more time on the slopes.

As this chalet is a large chalet there is a baby listening service every night which was excellent and the childcare staff literally sit on the floor at the end of the corridor listening out for the kids. We also thought the mini coca club was excellent keeping them amused for an hour in the evening.

We were visited by the Resort Manager who was very keen to get our feedback and I really appreciated that they seemed to be taking people's comments very seriously and doing their best to address concerns raised by previous holiday makers.

The childcare staff were fantastic and knowing the children were being looked after well meant we could enjoy our time on the slopes.

It says something about a chalet when the only suggestion my husband could come up with when asked by the Resort Manager was for more hooks in the bedroom.

Room Tip: The rooms with a balcony have the most amazing view of the mountains and are lovely and sunny.

We also stayed in jan 2012 at Chalet Corniche and totally agree with the other persons comments about the chalet. Chalet Corniche is supposed to be the flag ship chalet in Tigne but this couldn't be more far from the truth. The actual chalet is nice with great mountains views and the bedrooms were spacious. The lounge area was fine but did feel a little cramped at times when everyone was there at the same time. The biggest issue for our group was the way the chalet was run by the staff. They were totally inexperienced and had a very unprofessional attitude at times. On the first day the breakfast was half and hour late. It should have been ready a 7.30 but was not ready until 8 which made the children late for their ski pick up at 8.15. - they had been out partying that night hence the reason for the lateness. Also the kids high tea was always late. This should have been ready for 5.30 but often didn't come until gone 6 by which time the kids were starving.

The food was very mediocre and often over cooked. The kids portions were so small we were often asking for seconds and even thirds. The staff ate the left overs which would account for the size of the kids portions! The breakfast comprised of hard French stick and cold eggs and meat and soggy pain au chocolat which we never ate. We had to boil the leaky kettle ourselves to make tea. The cake for afternoon tea was often burnt but we were so hungry we ate it.

They never changed the sheets or the towels all week which we we thought was disgusting. When we raised this with the management they just said that it was their policy not to change them during the stay but the chalet maids could wash them for us if it was really necessary?!?

Also the chalet security was a major problem, we had 2 strangers enter the chalet looking for work- totally unacceptable when you have children running around. They left the boot room unlocked most nights which meant we had to check it ourselves. One night the gas was left on and luckily the owner lives above and came down and switched it off!

The espirit resort staff seemed to treat the chalet as a holiday camp most of them came to the chalet to eat and would often have the music blaring out from the kitchen. We had to tell them on numerous occasions to turn their music down as it clashed with our own.

Some of the child care staff were awful, you could tell they didnt have the patience to deal with the younger ones. I had to complain about one member of staff as her attitude towards the children (and adults ) was so appalling we banned her from coming to the chalet Having said that some of the childcare staff were very good with the children which is what you would expect for a family ski specialist.

The transport to take the 2 year olds to crèche was not provided as stated in the brochure they caught the local loop bus which meant that they were often outside waiting in the cold for the bus to arrive, they then had to walk up a steep hill to get to the nursery.

We were told that improvers needed lift passes for their lessons which was a total waste of time as their didn't use their pass until the third day. When we raised this with the management they just said that the "group" wasn't ready which meant that the able children were being held back.

Luckily for us we went on holiday with a good group of friends which meant that we were able to have a good time notwithstanding the issues that we had with espirit. Some of the staff were very good - mike hosted our chalet one evening and couldn't do enough for us which was a breath of fresh air.

The chalet girls are very nice and polite and at times (after us having to complain ) they did try a bit harder however they just did not understand the needs of the guests. They were not sufficiently supported by management and clearly lacked the training you were expect from an experienced family ski specialist. We did raise all these issues with the staff and management during our holiday but the fact that we had to complain took the shine off the holiday. We have booked with espirit in the past but will not be booking with them again in the future.

If you have booked the chalet this season, hopefully things will improve by the time you arrive.

Room Tip: All rooms are well placed with balconies apart from the two interconnecting room. All rooms are goo...

We wish to make it clear that this guest stayed at the Corniche as part of the same party referred to in the first review. Since then our Management team has implemented a full improvement plan to address any issues and ensure that our staff consistently deliver the standards we expect of them.

We have a new chef in place who provides strong leadership to the rest of the team with regard to meal times and quality. For example, in the week beginning 29th Jan. 2012, in questionnaires the team achieved a score of nearly 95% "excellent" or "good" for the food presentation and quality.

The whole team at the Corniche is determined to provide all future guests with a great holiday.
