“Great chalet”
Reviewed May 16, 2013

We stayed in the 'Chalet Alexandre' as part of a Neilson package in February. On arriving at the hotel we were greeted by out chalet hosts who were all very friendly and polite. The main dining/living area was very spacious, but cosy with a log fire that was lit on request. The bedrooms were very quaint; ours was on the top floor with an en-suite. After a long day skiing the shower was a god send; always hot and very powerful. Wifi was available throughout the chalet for free which was good.

The food was excellent; breakfast consiseted of cereal/rfuit/yoghurt etc or acooked breakfast. It happened to be valentines day during our stay and a special breakfast of eggs benedict was prepared. Tea and coffee were available all day. No formal lunch was provided; but afternoon tea at 3pm was more than enough to keep one going with lots of cakes and crusty french bread. Each evening there was a three course meal and I must say the food was excellent and very varied, the wine was good quality and most importantly plentiful!

The resort itself was great; lots of little shops to potter around in the day and lots of reasonably priced bars to have a drink in the evening. The skiing was OK; I am a beginner and found that there weren't many 'easier' runs; even some of the blues and greens were hard to naviagte, plus only no blue and only one geren run (which was very narrow and winding) lead right back to the resort.

I just wanted to say a big thanks again to the hosts at Chalet Alexandre in Les Deux Alpes. Marc, Charlie and Roseanna were fantastic all week and made us feel very welcome and comfortable.

Having decided to book a holiday through Neilson, I already had high hopes following my previous experiences and I’m pleased to say that things are still great and everyone within our party was extremely impressed with the service!!

On arrival in resort, we had a great welcome by the hosts, they helped with our baggage, walked those that needed it to the Aalborg for equipment hire, and pointed the rest of us in the direction of the best pub for the rugby so we were all happy!!

The rooms were spacious and very comfortable, and living room area was great for such as large group - fantastic for socialising.

In a nutshell, food - great, room cleanliness - great, general attitude of the hosts - fantastic, and our overall holiday experience was brilliant.

Thanks again Neilson for a great holiday - we'll be going again with you next year!! (I only wish I could squeeze another one in this year!).

Room Tip: All rooms are nice - the rooms for 4 people are on the lower floor.

I couldn’t find any reviews on Chalet Alexandre when I booked up so thought this would be of use, particularly as our stay was so great! I booked up for 8 of us through Neilson, who we tend to use for all of our ski trips as they are a great company. Booking was really easy, done over the phone, and I was sent regular invoices each time a payment was made. We got the holiday for a fantastic price and it included 2 for 1 ski passes.

We flew in to Grenoble about 9am (terrible airport, luggage reclaim was a joke!) and had to wait on the transfer coach for other flights to come in. This is standard but still pretty annoying however we were in resort by about 1pm so not too bad. We were met near the Diable lift by our hosts Marc and Rosanna and then had a short walk (roughly 5 mins) to the Chalet which is a great location on Rue Sainte Luce, close to the lift and also to the shops and bars. It is an easy walk in ski boots to the Diable high speed lift and about 10 mins walk to the Jandri Express Gondola. No hills to walk up so all good there! Chalet is of a good size as it sleeps 18 people and has three levels:

-Ski room (also the entrance to the chalet) 1 twin room, 2 quad rooms and sauna on ground floor.
-Twin Room and Lounge/Kitchen/Dining Room on First Floor
-A double and 2 twin rooms in Attic.

Our room was an Attic double and I was a bit apprehensive as thought it would be really cramped with no head room to stand up but it wasn’t at all. Had ample space and a good bathroom with a large shower. Drawer and wardrobe space was adequate. Friends stayed in a good sized quad room, with bunks and twin beds split in to two rooms, although the lighting in there wasn’t great at night; they had just one dim light in the twin part of the room. Towels are changed through the week and we were given a fluffy bathrobe and towel for the sauna too. Shower pressure could be a bit hit and miss, it would tend to go off if several people were showering at the same time but this only happened a few times. Bed was incredibly comfy and had decent pillows so we slept very well. The lounge area was a good size with a log fire and 4 comfy sofas. Could probably do with another sofa though as not all 18 people can sit down on them at the same time.

Marc and Rosanna were our hosts and they were absolutely fantastic-very friendly, welcoming and provided amazing meals! I’m a particularly fussy eater but all meals were of excellent quality and variety-goat’s cheese tart, mozzarella stuffed chicken and sticky toffee pudding to name just a few courses. If there was something that we didn’t like then we were able to have the vegetarian option which were also fantastic. Different wines were provided each night and were bottled, not in carafes like other chalets we have stayed in, and most importantly there was enough going round each night! The cakes made for afternoon tea were also gorgeous. On our departure day they even provided us with a bacon roll to take our journey at 5am.

One evening we were too tired to go out to the quiz night at the Aarlborg but instead Marc and Rosanna offered up their time to stay at the chalet and do their own version for us (with prizes!) which was very amusing. Marc also came up the slopes with us on our last day. Another host for the Chalet Chartreuse situated right next door was Will, and he often helped with breakfasts and was also very friendly. Our rep, Guy, was also very good and he often came to the chalet to make sure everything was ok. We booked up on the bar crawl and ski away day to Serre Chevalier with him. This day trip was really well organised and very informative, the most organised ski away trip we have been on. All Neilson staff that we met during this holiday were absolutely brilliant and wanted to make sure we were all ok and having a good time. And if the relevant people are reading this then you should definitely give Marc the head chef job that he wants next year as he is an amazing chef and took real pride in his cooking!

As a resort, Les deux Alpes has loads to do and the bars/restaurants are very reasonably priced. Polar Bear and Smithy’s do very good Mojitos on tap! Les Sagnes is a lovely place to go for Fondues, we went there on hosts day off. And the Pano Bar up the mountain is very entertaining! We had been to 2 Alpes before but this holiday and the standard of service and accommodation that we received was far superior. We were all depressed to come home :(

Room Tip: Attik rooms were a pretty good size with views, twin room with bath isn't worth the extra money...
