“An extremely good value hotel in an excellent location.”
Reviewed September 4, 2010

This was the second time that we have stayed at this hotel and do not hesitate to recommend it as either a solo, family or group hotel. Its location in this alpine village is excellent. The staff are friendly and helpful, most of them speaking some English. The rooms sometimes on the rather small side are warm and clean. The choice at breakfast is by the far the the most extensive I ahve come accross not only in a tourist type hotel but in any hotel. The dinner in the evening is five course if coffee is included with at least two choices for the main course and a wide range for each of the others. The village itself in the summer provides three cable cars / sky chair lifts, there is also a summer tobbogan run and ice rink among the faciluties offered and all within five minutes of the hotel. Although I have not stopped in the winter sports season it is centrally situated for sky and other facilities and well equipped. There is a large market on Monday mornings. It isalso good as a family hotel. I found the prices of wines and drinks in the hotel compatible with prices in general and not extortionate. If I have one critisism it is that there are no walk in showers available for the disabled but it is otherwise perfectly suitable. In short if you are looking for a hotel in this region then go for it!

We stayed here on a weekend break and chose it quite last minute. The location was great, just a stones throw from town and the nearest ski lift but the hotel is old and could really do with a refurb - handles falling off doors and general upkeep poor! It seems we were given a disabled access room, and whilst the bathroom was generous, the room itself was very small. Getting there at the start was also a trek, the hotel is set out as a bit of a maze. The keys didn't work on two attempts, and trips back and forth to reception is a little infuriating when all you want to do on a Friday night is check in, then go out! We had booked a double but got a twin. No breakfast included in the rate made this a pricey stay.

Well, believe it or not we came to la clusaz for a business meeting. It was a long journey down by train, and we arrived very early in the morning after a fairly sleepless night. We had an external facilitator for this team building event and she was probably the worst least empathetic communicator I have ever met. We rolled bleary-eyed and a bit frazzled off the coach and she was all over us like a rash, trying to hurry us along and get us into th meeting room to start. We all decided the meeting would start once we'd all showered and had coffee and not before - not a great start! Anyway, the hotel is a lovely setting, and la clusaz is a very satisfying place, and good for ski-ing, so my colleagues who skied told me. We did all sorts of cool stuff, including snow shoeing, going in a half track up to a shepherds croft and eating home made goats cheese, and a memorable journey to a restaurant you'd normally only get on skis (we had skidoos and a snowtrak), then we were all given what looked to me like a small wooden tray, and told to luge our way down the piste - great fun!
Anyway, food in the hotel was nice, pretty rustic mountainy stuff, the interior of the hotel did look a bit dated to me, but that might just have been the style for a ski-lodge type place I don't know. I shared a room with a mate, so a twin, which wasn't huge, no minibar, and not much to write home about.
Anyway, we had a great time there anyway. Mountains were amazing.

The hotel is comfortable if a little dated. Even though we had a family room (there was only two of us), the room was still quite small. Good location, right in centre so easy access to bars and restaurants.

If going to La Clusaz I would recommend that you go for breakfast at the 'chocolatier/salon du the' by Hotel Christina - coffee, juice, bread and jam, plus two pastries for 7 Euros - which is a bargain compared to hotel breakfast prices!

I stayed here for 4 nights as part of company meeting. Everything was clean and neat, the food was good and plentiful, and the staff friendly and helpful. As with most of La Clusaz, English is nobody's first language and not most people's second either. There always seemed to be someone at the desk or in the restaurant who spoke passable English and did their best to answer my questions and make me feel welcome.

Depending on what you're used to, the rooms may seem small. I thought they were appropriately cozy for a mountain village and had plenty of space to store everything.

  • Liked — Friendly, accessible staff.
  • Disliked — Access to the upper floors (need to use 2 separate elevators at opposite ends of the building).

Just back from a fantastic week's skiing in the beautiful village of La Clusaz. We stayed at the Hotel Alpen Roc with our 4 year old and 18 month old, and found it to be great for our needs. The rooms are basic and small no doubt, but the location of the hotel is excellent being almost in the village centre, and overlooking the Alps, 5 mins walk to ski lifts and many great runs. It also had a kids play room, dinner and evening movie for kids, plus small swimming pool. The food was fine, and you were given vouchers towards eating out elsewhere in the village. Overall for us it was a good value as far as ski accommodation is concerned. If you bear in mind it is a 3 star family ski hotel, and less expensive than its more comfortable sister hotel (also 3 star) the Beauregard, you won't be dissapointed.

I stayed at the Alpen Roc as part of a large group. The room was rather small, with two twin beds that could be pushed together and, in the small corridor, a bunk bed. A family of four that was looking to save money could all fit, but it would be very crowded and cramped. The bathroom and WC were ok, but verging on the odd smell and weird. It did seem very clean, though, just old and not of the best quality.

We had half-pension, i.e., breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was fine. Dinner was fine, if nothing special. They certainly don't go all out. The staff at reception were very nice. There is a ski rental shop in the hotel, which is helpful, and a nice spa area, better than one would expect.

The hotel was full of groups (including us) when we were there. The bar got full very quickly.

On the whole, I would say this is a decent hotel for a three-star in a French ski area. Don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed.
