“Noisey location, can't swing a cat, poor service.... won;t rush back...”
Reviewed January 3, 2011

Just returned from a new year break with my husband and brother.
Booked the resport as it was supposedly 4 star (a rarety for apartments in france) and it actually showed as a one bedroomed apartment with separate sleeping area.....(another rartety in france)...... mmm not sure I'd call two single beds crammed together agaist 2 walls, 6 inches on one side and 12 inches on the other a bedroom.... the apartment was serviceable for a week, although you can't swing a cat..... Definatly didn't deserve a 4 star rating!..... It was in a good central location in the eveining for restaurants, pool etc.... but as others say a very long walk to lifts/pistes and very noisey with drunk revellers every night walking by....... when we opened the door for the first time we discovered the previous inhabitants were very very heavy smokers :-(...... We asked the reception to move us, they said there were no available apartments but they would send the cleaners in the next day..... nothing happended,.... the language barrier became a real issue and we were just ignored....... so eventually gave up, left all the windows and doors open all day and night and brought airfreshners and candles.... but the place was so stained and curtains invested it was a very unpleasant stay all week....clothes and bed linen wreaked of smoke after 24 hours... but suffered and kept the windows open.......won't rush back.....

Many thanks for posting your review. We are pleased that you enjoyed the central location of your accommodation. We are sorry that the level of cleanliness did not meet your expectations. Although we are confident our reception team endeavour to resolve any issues for guests who are disappointed with their apartment it is with great regret we were unable move you to an alternative apartment during your stay as the residence was fully booked. We do try to ensure a good level of English is spoken and customer service is offered at all of our reception desks, please accept our sincere apologies if this was not the case during your stay. In regards to the noise level, we do have a "no noise after 10pm" policy at our residences but regret that disturbances can still be caused by excessive noise within the ski resort itself. We have logged your review and passed your feedback on to head office and our management teams. As we are committed to improving all aspects of our service and accommodation we thank you for your feedback.

We spent several days in Alpes d'Huez as several family members were undertaking the tough annual triathalon. The room/suite is extremely well designed and thoughtout with cupboards and hooks in all the right places. The kitchen facilities were good, the bathrooms OK and the beds hard! Notionally the suite sleep 7 adults, but that is definitely a squeeeze, but four was very comfortable. The hotel has no other facilities and front desk service is limited to a few hours a day. As the property is very well located, restaurants, provisions and general access to everything is on the door step.
Good value both winter (ski in/out) and summer, but nothing fancy. We had no problem with noise and had a great panorama across the Alpes valley.
Security an issue!

We had a week at these self catering residences, not to be confused with the up market hotel next door of the same name! The appartment was very small, but so are our kids (6&4) so it wasn't a problem. The room could have been cleaner, dust on top of the skirting boards. There is no oven, just a microwave grill and hob, so no adventureous meals! You can buy a cooked chicken and 4 portions of chips at the shop across the road for 15.5 euros, this seems a lot buy by Alpe D'Huez stamdards it is quite reasonable!
The ski bus passes the door and has one at the slopes in a few minutes. The swimming pool is a few minutes walk up the road, be warned gents, only the "speedo" style tight fitting truns will do, i was refused entry with my more modest shorts!
Can be a bit noisy with passing traffic in the early hours and pedestrians at night.
The internet is not free and the tv seemed to have no english speaking channels so it was as much use to me as a chocolate tea pot.
The recepion staff were very pleasent and helpful.
The french ski school ESF was excellent for our kids, afternoon lessons are very cheap if you are having morning lessons aswell, £50 for 6 days!
The best value cafe we found for lunch was Mac Reynard at the DMC. Trick is to get there before the end of morning ski school as it fills with ski instructors. The food is superb and the quantities positively american! first day we bought the kids a kids meal each, after that it was one meal between them and an extra icecream. I understand that you can down load a "snowball pass" and get free internet at this cafe, though i didnt find it till my return home!
All in great holiday and will probably return next year unless some volcano blows and melts all the snow!!

Spent a week skiing in Alpe D'Huez and stayed at the Hotel Ours Blanc. The food was excellent and the staff helpful. Unfortunately the 'central location' meant that late night revellers walk past the hotel from clubs/ bars in the early hours of the morning making a lot of noise. Also, when it snows, the diggers started clearing the roads at 5am. There is a bus service to some of the slopes although we needed to access the Grande Rousses ski area for lessons which was accessable from the basket ski lift '400m from the hotel' However, this was very busy in the morning and it took over 30 minutes from leaving the hotel to arriving at the ski school meeting point. Next time I would book a hotel away from the noise and more conveniently located for the slopes

Many thanks for posting your review. Our residence is centrally located and is ideal for ski in/ski out customers. Unfortunately this does mean many skiers will be passing the property après ski. We have however, noted your point about the ski lessons and this will be passed onto management for further consideration. Best wishes

As an all male group of eight 40 somethings we travelled from Gatwick to Alpe D'Huez for a week of Hard Core skiing, no partying, no boozing and no late nights, we were there with the sole purpose to ski and board!

The transfer from Grenoble to Alpe D'huez was a long one due to heavy traffic through Grenoble meaning we arrived at the Royal Ours Blanc in the dark at about 8pm. The reception staff dealt with check in very efficiently and allocated 4 rooms one each on floors 1,2,3 and 4. We had booked 'Platinum' rooms through Ski France / Iglu Ski and were a little dissapointed to find they were just standard rooms, but perfectly adequate and each with a good size balcony and stunning views to the South.

After a very quick un-pack it was down to the restaraunt for our first dinner.
The Maitre d, 'Serge' who greeted us was impeccably dressed and very 'french' we were quickly allocated tables that would be ours for the week. We were also looked after by Serge's side kick 'Laurent' who was absolutley fantastic and very efficient.
First nights food was a traditional Tartiflette, a savoyard speciality that was cooked and served to perfection, although for me as a the only Veggie on the trip I was well catered for with a seperate dish created especially for me!
In short every evening we had a varied 5 course meal including a cheese course, the food was mostly of a good standard with a couple of dodgy main courses that resembled 'road kill' (the veal springs to mind!) Wine with dinner was extra but was very reasonably priced (for a mountain venue) with most bottles under 20 euros. Breakfast was a very good buffett affair with a choice of cooked sausages and bacon, omelette, cheeses, fruit, cereals and a host of french pastries, croisants and pain au. chocolates.

The night times are a very noisey affair with street noise somenights going on until 5am, this obviously has nothing to do with the hotel but I was surprised that as a resort this was accepted and allowed each night.
The position of the hotel is not perfectly placed for any of the ski lifts which require a short mini bus trip or walk if you are lucky enough to be wearing snowboard boots to the slopes, this service is provided free by the hotel but needs to be booked at reception each day. There is also free of charge resort buses circling the village non stop if you miss the minibus.

The Hotel has its own Spa, pool, solarium, saunas and steam rooms, these are all of a great standard (or so I was told, I never used any of them, but friends did!) and everything is included with the hotel except for massage.

One downside of the resort, as with many french resorts are the extortionate prices in the bars and restaurants, 16 euros for 2 pints of Guiness and 18 euros for 3 coffees spring to mind. This mindless overcharging justs tempts people in to the Spar shops to buy their own beers and snacks etc, whereas if the prices were set at a sensible rate folk would happily pay the rates.
The skiing was good and quite varied, although some of the black runs seemed quite easy for Blacks? It sells itself as 240km of pistes but many of these just run parrallel to others and are given a seperate name but we easily covered the whole ski area in a week.

In summary the Hotel was great and the staff very helpful and attentive and certainly all we needed but maybe not quite what I would expect for a 4 star. I would certainly re-visit Hotel Royal Ours Blanc again if I return to Alpe D'Huez.

The hotel has some quite spacious, clean, modern-looking rooms, which we were fortunate to get (Platinum suite). Very powerful showers. Note the jacuzzi function of baths have all been disconnected - they should NOT be advertising this feature any more.

Food - just quite average really. If vegetarian, you may find yourself eating lots of cheese at mealtime... Only 1 waiter had his head screwed on and was proactive about anything (menus, drink, cutlery, next course...)

Drink - surprisingly no drink was included in the half-board package, as I have experienced on other ski holidays (at hotels). Their wine selection was quite good (but added quite a bit more to our hotel bill.)

Staff - cleaners left our room open throughout one day, & colleagues found the master key left in their room door(!)

Manager - very abrupt, and quite rude at times. Group had all booked Platinum rooms, but some were given the standard rooms. The management really just shook their shoulders initially. After 2 days, they reallocated 1 room. Appeared to be poor communication between staff at reception too.

The Ski & boot room is actually too small for all the hotel residents to use - we were asked to store our gear on our balconies (even though some rooms didn't have one!)

Not all rooms have safes, so you may have to rely on reception to keep valuables in an envelope for you (make sure it's correctly marked with your room number - they got that wrong last week too).

Bar - that was good, and had a friendly chilled out barman.

Unfortunately the overall staff attitude let this hotel down, so I can't recommend it as-is.

Stayed here the last week of Feb 2010 and would recommend it. The rooms were fine - noise at 5am every morning from people and the piste groomers but i've never managed to find a ski hotel that doesn't have this problem. The food was really good - decent breakfast and 4 course dinner (so not the 5 course advertised, but plenty of food). Considering the costs in the resort (£3.50 for a can of coke in one cafe!), we thought the wine prices were reasonable by the bottle.
Location was really convenient - the free shuttle stops outside the door every 10 mins or you can use the hotel's own minibus on request.
The spa was also a welcome addition at the end of the day, although the jacuzzi and steam room didn't work the whole time we were there which was a shame.
Overall i'd go back again and recommend it to friends. However, we did get a real bargain due to ski france double booking our original holiday, so we may have a better opinion than people who paid nearer to the brochure price!
