Nice restaurant, nice atmosphere, lovely setting good service and tasty food and wine. Only criticisms are the lack of sea/lake food on the menu, and the steak tartare portion was too large and too meaty (there seemed to be very little mixed in with the beef).

We dined on a Saturday night and had made a reservation. Customers arriving after 8pm were turned away.

Hearty meal, rustic, pleasant. Seems to be run by family itself. Meat is fabulous. Portions are large - too much for each of the four of us.

I travel to the western-Geneva area regularly and love this little restaurant-café in Ferney Voltaire. By day, it's a tea room; in the evenings it becomes a tiny restaurant with full meal service. As far as I can tell, the entire enterprise, from the kitchen to the table service, is run by the middle-aged couple who owns the place. The menu is limited to about 10 or so main dishes that sum up the local French cuisine; essentially all are meat-based, so vegetarians may want to look elsewhere. Not all of the menu items may be available on any given evening since some items sell out. I take this to be a good thing---the shopping is done frequently and the ingredients are fresh. My favorite item on the menu is the magret de canard with sauce au poivre, which, depending upon how hungry you are, can serve two. It is sliced and served at the table, which makes it particularly easy to share---just ask for an extra plate. I've tried many of the other choices too: they are all delicious and the portions are fairly abundant. (The one item which I am less crazy about is the poulet supreme in roquefort sauce, which too heavy for me, and also too heavy to eat a lot of, which is maybe why the portion is smaller.) There is an excellent wine list with lots of choices for wines by the carafe. The setting is intimate; the small dining room is charming and clearly works best for couples and small groups---it will not work out well for a large and/or boisterous group. Think of being invited to the owners' house for dinner. The couple who run the place are extremely attentive servers who are clearly (justly) proud of their food and their restaurant. As a result, a meal at La Truite recalls a tradition in French restaurants in which even eating at a modest place feels like a big deal. The best part is that the prices are not a big deal: two mains (with accompanying sides) and a half-liter of wine will run you around €35 per person---more expensive than a pizza, but quite reasonable by local standards, especially considering the quality. Reservations are absolutely essential, even during weeknights--the place is small and generally fully booked.

While I lived in Ferney Voltaire, I visited this place at least once a week. Try the roquefort sauce with the steak, you wont be disappointed. For lunch do not plan to get there after 1.3opm, they wont serve you.

The food and the wine are good. Compared to the prices in neighbouring Geneva, the prices are moderate and affordable. The service is friendly, efficient and pleasant. In the summer one can sit on the terrace and watch life go by.
