Enjoyed a one night stay before our trip up to Val Thorens. We had to wait for several minutes before anyone arrived to check us in. Rooms were small but clean and comfortable, and hotel is in a beautiful location by the river. We had to ask for a double though, as we were given a twin instead. Breakfast was not good value, very basic, not even fruit juice offered, just coffee, bread, butter and jam for 8€ each.

Dear Guest,

We thank you for having taken the time to give your opinion about our hotel.
As a family hotel, it might happen that the reception staff is away from reception for few minutes (in the floors...). In that case, we don't miss to leave a note on the reception desk with a phone to call the person in duty.

Regarding the room, it happens very often that on the booking (with certain websites), we don't have the type of rooms (double or twin) and are obliged to choose ourselves. However on request and depending on the availability, we always allocate the propoer room type the customer needs if we can.
The smallest rooms we have are 19 m².

For breakfast, we do have a buffet during the winter and the ski season, the from April, we are switching to continental breakfast as the specificity of Brides-Les-Bains from then is a SPA town specialised on diet. However our continental breakfast (for non-diet) contains an orange juice and pastries among other. Other items are also availabble on request (cereals for exemple). If our breakfast didn't reached your expectation, we apologise for that.

We thank you once again for your custom and hope to welcome you again at the Hotel.

We were very happy with our choice. The staff couldn't have been more helpful & cooperative. The room was very comfortable although not large. The wi-fi worked well & did not go off at 10 as other reviews have said. I do not ski so was around during the day but the room was still a comfortable temperature (although being March the weather was very reasonable anyway). The breakfast was adequate but there were no hot options. The coffee was very enjoyable, although I do like strong coffee, but if you don't then you can always add water. The evening meals were pretty good, a 4 course meal at this price was excellent value. For those who commented on cheese every day, that is a normal course to be expected in a french meal & they could always have left it out - we were always asked if we wanted cheese

I stayed at Hotel Athena with my wife and 2 other couples during February half term (probably the busiest week of the year), after looking for somewhere reasonably priced with great skiing. We were generally very impressed.

The hotel is situated about a 5 minute walk from the main street which includes many hotels and a few bars and restaurants. It isn't the liveliest ski resort, but there are a few places to grab a drink/snack.

The hotel restaurant serves a basic (but well stocked) breakfast of ham, cheese, cereal, yoghurt and bread; as other reviewers have pointed out the coffee is disgusting! Dinner was well varied with a decent starter, main, cheese course and desert. We were well "cheesed out" by the end of the week! Drinks are reasonably priced and the house red is ok. There isn't a choice of meals at dinner, but all of us were able to eat the majority of our dinners every night (I dislike sweetcorn so had to pick this out one night, for instance).

The rooms are spacious, include an LCD TV and most have Wifi (chargeable in rooms but free in reception). We couldn't get the wifi as we were in the corner of the basement but our friends on the reception floor could get the free wifi in their room. The beds are comfortable. You can hear the stream outside, but I found it quite relaxing. They have some interconnecting rooms, which is great if you're travelling with friends/family.

The sauna, steam room, and jacuzzi is a nice touch, I used these every day and was very impressed.

The staff are very well mannered, polite and willing to help.

The ski lifts are a max 10 minute walk away (you can do it in ski boots) but the free bus is excellent; it's a comfortable van rather than the usual ski bus and runs every 10 minutes in the mornings and evenings; though we didn't ever seem to wait that long.

The 3 valieys ski area is massive (you'll never ski it all in a week) and the gondola takes about 25 minutes. It's not a bad journey, although in the evenings, the queues were long to get on the gondola (20 mins or so).

Overall I'd recommend Brides and the Hotel Athena to anyone looking for a good value ski break with excellent skiing.

We knew the location in relation to the slopes was a compromise to fit in with our budget but all in all, we were really pleased to have stayed in this little gem of a 2* hotel. We had a tiring day getting to Brides and according to the holiday Rep, the transfer day had been a grueller all round but we relaxed as we walked in to a warmly decorated, cosy hotel with friendly greeting and news that the staff had stayed on late in order that we may have our dinner (at 10pm!), for which we were grateful. It's true that the food is rustic (and a little lacking in the veg department) but we enjoyed all of our meals and found the food tasty. Our main waitress (Sandrine? I think) deserves a mention as being always friendly and the perfect amount of attentive, keeping us well supplied with water and bread. We had a room at the front of the hotel which was well sized, warm, kept well and the beds were quite comfy. I especially found the oversized duvets a nice touch. A way to mount the shower head so you could actually stand and shower would have been good.
2 nice service surprises: I didn't believe it till we actually used them but the sauna, Hammam and jacuzzi REALLY are free to guests! Very soothing! And there is free WiFi, you just need to ask for a code from reception.
And the last pleasant surprise was the live music mid-week in the dining room. It made a lovely atmosphere and we didn't mind falling asleep to the tunes that one night - every other night was perfect peace and quiet!
Would happily return to Hotel Athena in the future.

We stayed at the Athena for 5 nights, we had booked our break through skiweekends.com (who I would highly recommend) from the 28th Jan to 1st Feb.

The hotel is small and quiet which suited us and is actually in a good location as you could walk to the Gondola (uo several hills however!) but there is a regular free shuttle bus which stops within a minutes walk of the hotel and comes every 10 mins or so, we never had to wait for one. (Also the rep's at Skiweekends will come and pick you up if you ask them too and drop you off which is an added bonus). Its about a 3 min drive to the Gondola then a 20 - 25 min ride to meribel. The town of Brides les Bain is a short walk away with other hotels bars and restaurants and in the town there is an ATM and Spar shop.

Check in was straight forward, staff were very pleasant and we were then shown to our room which was a double room at first but then explained we had booked a twin room so we were moved as soon as we arrived. We were on the ground floor started off at room 106 then moved to 109. The twin room was much larger than the double and has ample storage. There was a corrider which consisted of a wardrobe, the shower room and separate WC then a door to the bedroom which had the twin beds, another wardrobe, table and chair and TV (very limited channels!). This hotel is right next to the River which looks great but you can hear it when you sleep so if you are a light sleeper being on this side of the hotel may not suit you. Also it did say that a hairdryer was included but I didn't see one and had luckily taken my own. I have to say the shower is a power shower and was fabulous after a hard day hitting the slopes.

On our floor (0) there was also a sauna but we didn't use this. Upstairs was the reception, the hotel, bar (very small, not sure it constitutes as a bar!), restaurant, seating area and exit. The hotel does have a lift and has some lockers (for your ski's or boards) in the garage area which are padlocked and you can get one if you ask at reception for no charge.

We stayed on a half board basis. Dinner was served between 7pm and 9pm. The tables have your room number on them so you sit where your number is (but you do not get seated with other people on 1 table, you have a table just for your party).

It is very important to note that this hotel does not actually cater for vegetarians at all. You do not get a menu to choose from you basically get what you are given. It is a 4 course set menu (unless you want to pay for other food from the main menu), starter was usually soup or a salad. The main course was always meat, one night we had chicken & pasta, next pork and mashed potatoe, next night it was beef and cheesy potatoes and last night was lamb with cous cous, the 3rd course was always a small selection of cheese's but you do not get any bread with this so worth saving some from your main meal as they bring bread to your table during your starter and main and pudding was usually the best course! My brother however is not vegetarian so he eat very well indeed during our stay as he had all of my main meals!! If you like meat then you will have no problem, from what I was told the food was cooked very well. They also provide you with water then you can order drinks from the bar. The staff in the restuarant do not speak any English but managed to get by, my French is terrible but never had any problems throughout my stay.

Breakfast was between 7am and 9m and was very basic. They had their ham and cheese out which you totally expect to see anywhere in Europe! They also had bread and butter and a small selection of cereals (I am now into my fruit & fibre thanks to this hotel!). They also had plain crossants with a selection of jams but you had to get in early to make the most of them! The coffee was really strong but the orange juice was lovely.

All in all I would stay at this hotel again and I would even go half board again even though I know I wouldn't eat any of the main meals as it does take away the hassle of having to go back out in the freezing cold to find something to eat. Also I think this saved us a small fortune as it is very expensive here as I am sure you will expect as it is a ski resort.

Also the restaurants at the slopes are very expensive you don't get much change out of 15E for 2 hot chocolates and diet cokes!! We stopped off at the Spar in the morning and bought drinks and some food after our first day and at the slopes you can hire a locker which is expensive but works out cheaper then eating and drinking out everyday, we also left our boards there over night so you didn't have to carry them around everywhere with you! This was well worth it!

The last Gondola is at 5pm and if you are not on it then they will close it - so be warned! Lovely place though and again I would go back tomorrow if I could!

Hotel Athena:
A lovely simple hotel which seems family run. Clean rooms and friendly staff. Free Jacuzzi and sauna were fantastic in the evenings. Some may object to not having any choice when it came to the four course dinner (you get what you're given!) But we enjoyed the surprise and as long as you're not too picky with your food you should enjoy the simple but tasty nosh.
Brides les Bains is quiet and pretty. Lovely walks in the hills above the town.

Have just come home from Brides les Bains the Hotel Athena...The hotel itself is very nice and clean, lovely 4 course dinner every evening and a buffet breakfast. Very very quiet. It is about 15 min walk to the gondola but they have a courtesy minibus that will take you there between about 8.30and9.30and pick you up between 5.00and6.00. They also gave us a key for a locker under the gondola so we never had to lug all our stuff back and forth, therefore leaving time to go to the pub...teehee. Not a lot to do on an evening but we nipped to the local spar to get some beer and wine and had it in our room after enjoying a nice bottle of wine at dinner. I would recommend this if you want to ski ski ski and not want the nightlife..We thought it was nice although the 20 min gondola ride does get annoying after a few days as the lift stops at 5.30 so you will have to find another way of getting down if you miss it. We bought an area lift pass but felt there was no need there is so much skiing to do in meribel all we needed was a local pass.. Great holiday really for the oldies like us hahahaha
