Fantastic Experience!!! The best hotel I have ever been to. In fact, it felt as being at home and I was in tears leaving the hotel and my new found family. Originally, I was booked for two weeks but after only two days I extended my stay for a third week (the maximum I could afford away from home). Location is wonderful, the staff was just amazing and very helpful, and the facilities were superb. I was traveling with my young son (seven years old) and the staff went way out of their way to entertain him and to give the space and opportunity to have the full benefit of the retreat. I always thought you should decide where you want to go and then book a convenient hotel, but after my experience in "Les Chalets" I found out it is the hotel that make all the difference if you are going for a retreat like "Brides les Bains". I left part of my heart back there – will be going back repeatedly.

This was our third stay inn the Hotel Les Chalets. Aude & Boris the proprietors of Hotel les Chalets are always happy to facilitate our needs. The rooms are clean and comfortable, food is good, very good value. The gondola takes about 35 mins to Meribel, however, when conditions are good you can ski to other mid stations in the evening.

We arrived just as a school party (around 50) was about to eat supper so this must have been the toughest time for the hotel. The staff were lovely and very helpful but not always easy to find! Our family room was clean and adequate. Dinner was good although breakfast was rather less so. Altogether this was good. If you are staying in Brides to get the gondola to Meribel then this is very well located too.

This is our 6th return to this hotel and it is exceptional in everyway. The staff are excellent, the food is great and suitable for the end of busy days skiing. The Hoteliers Boris and Aude cant do enough for you and are helpful and approachable with any problems and concerns you have. The hotel feels more on a personal level and as a school we do not feel that we are going to stay in a hotel, but someone large house where we are looked after year after year. I would recommend this hotel for group/school bookings, but also for keen skiers which will get housed and feed well on the door step of some exceptional skiing. We will definitly come back and would recommend this hotel to any school ski trip leaders. Thanks again Hotel Les Chalet from the Castle School, Taunton, Somerset.

Can really say that there is anything good about this hotel (more of a hostel) the worst hotel i have ever stayed in. The room are to a very poor standard, the beds fell to bit when you lay on them, the beds came with one very thin sheet of bedding and we stayed in the winter time, when we asked for another quilt on two seperate occasions there was still no futher quilts supplied by the hotel. The bathoom had no toilet seat and the shower was covered in limescale, we had a balcony view of a rubbish tip and a set of broking tables and chairs. The food was horrible, i would even feed it to my dog. The breakfast table in the morining was covered in ants, the staff who worked at the hotel lacked motivation when serving food morining and night. The was no night time entertainment and the hotel smelt. I would not recommend this hotel to any one, it may look good in the photos but take my advice it lacked in many parts. Save your money and book somewhere else!!

The Hotel Les Chalets is a quaint smallish hotel situated just down the road (about 150 metres) from the Olympe 1 gondola that takes you up to Meribel 1450. The Olympe gondola 1 leads onto 2 and then finally 3 before arriving at the top station. Although the gondola time is advertised as taking about 20 minutes, when I timed it the one day it was more like 30 minutes (28 to be exact) plus there is a good 5 minute walk down steps or a 2-3 minute ski down to the Chaudanne area where the main lifts are in Meribel. The thing is each day we were wasting over an hour of skiing time (30 mins each way on the gondola) plus the queuing time at the end of the day to get back on the gondola to come down. The good thing about the Olympe gondola is that it does shut at 5.00pm in peak season mind you so at least you do get a bit of time to have a drink before having to catch the gondola back down.

The hotel itself was alright, it's only advertised as a 2 star anyway. Bed was very comfortable although my room was absolutely titchy on the 3rd floor with a single bed, although some guests got a double bed in their room for no extra cost which seemed a bit unfair. The food was alright, but not that great for a ski hotel and you're looking forward to a good meal at the end of a hard day's skiing. One thing notably absent was a hot breakfast choice in the morning, plus there was no bread rolls to have with the cheese and ham etc. Also that week they seemed to have a lot of trouble with the hot water, for 4 of the 7 nights we were there the hot water would come and go while you were having a shower, there didn't appear to be enough hot water. Some hot chocolate would have been nice and definitely some decent vin chaud behind the bar not some stuff out of a packet.

Verdict-this hotel is probably alright and will do for a school ski trip, or if you're not particularly fussy about sitting on a gondola for an hour or more each day to ski up in Meribel. I wouldn't stop here again personally and if you're in a group or couple then you'd be better off stopping up in Meribel nearer the centre itself and the Rond Point where all the apres ski is for not a lot extra than what we paid. Generally I did leave feeling a bit disappointed to be honest although perhaps they did take the comments on board about the food being a bit inadequate because the review from March 2008 said the food was excellent, which is good if they made a change.

Avoid Meribel in February anyway if you can it is absolutely heaving because all the French have holidays in February. There is a little shack just down from the Brides Les Bains gondola that serves delicious vin chaud! Brides Les Bains itself is quite a nice little place with a few shops to have a look round and some restaurants. If you have a car then it's probably quicker to drive up to Meribel and park in the car park for 3E per day so someone else was telling me. Generally, though, nice and comfy bed and a quiet room was probably the best bit about this hotel.

  • Liked — Too far from the main ski area for serious skiers-ok if you pack up early anyway
  • Disliked — Intermittent hot water when you were having a shower! Food not great-basic but edible.

I took a school party of 48 to this hotel for a week's skiing in Meribel and other three valleys resorts. Boris and Aude were brilliant - friendly, helpful, and entertaining! They couldn't do enough for us. The hotel is comfortable without being lavish, the food excellent, and so close to the gondola connecting to Meribel in 20 mins. The town of Brides-les-Bains is small enough to be cosy and safe but large enough to have everything you want. Highly recommended for budget-conscious families who want to ski in one of the region's premier areas.
