“Books and Art”
Reviewed July 17, 2013

This was a fascinating B&B in the heart of the old city of Vaison La Romaine. Rooms are located on several levels and art work and libraries can be found throughout this lovely home. Guests have access to the library on the main floor which is beautifully appointed with art and sculpture. Breakfast is served inside or on a charming patio. Our hosts, Jean-Loup and Aude, who speak excellent English, were gracious and helpful in suggesting restaurants or sights to see. Our favorite room was the suite on the top floor that was spacious and gave a birdseye view of the city.

If you are looking for a perfect small B & B in a wonderful setting, then look no further! Aude and Jean-Loup are extremely friendly welcoming hosts; the house is full of character and crammed with beautiful pictures on every available wall-space; our room and bathroom were comfortable and clean; breakfast outside on the terrace was delicious........ we would recommend it unhesitatingly to anyone visiting this historic town. The only slight downside is the parking, which involves leaving the car outside the town walls and walking a couple of hundred yards with your luggage, - a minor inconvenience and small price to pay for its location in such narrow mediaeval streets.

Charming B&B in a great location in the old city. Charming breakfasts in the outdoor patio. The rooms were generous in size and the art work throughout the house was amazingly good--very high quality. Outstanding hospitality by our hosts who were very helpful with sightseeing in the area and recommending restaurants. Hated to leave after three nights.

First of all the town of Vaison la Romaine is in such a beautiful spot. There is the new part, which is a lively and bustling town on the river overlooked by the medieval part built high on a dramatic rocky outcrop, higher still is the remains of the chateau. L'Eveche is hidden away in the medieval part up a steep and winding narrow street. Inside the owners have made a wonderfully quirky and rambling house into a very arty and characterful guesthouse. All the furnishings and colour schemes have been chosen with care, the walls are covered with interesting, original paintings and drawings. The garden is a delight and this is where we sat for our breakfast. Our bedroom had a romantic view of the rooftops below and the mountains in the distance. The breakfast was presented with utmost attention to detail and a big selection of fruit and cereals were available and the bread was lovely and so was the jam. Our hosts were charming and helpful, what more could you wish for, we will be looking forward to having the chance of staying longer next time.
We also had the best nights sleep we have enjoyed for a long time.

The Eveche was the first station on our trip to France. I knew the hotel would be located in the old part of Vaison so access by car wasn’t easy. That’s why I researched the situation on Google Streetview. So we parked our car on a public carpark and took our bags with us.

When we arrived the owner of the hotel seems to have seen us, and opened us the door. He asked if he should explain us the things in English or French. He told us a bit about the history of the hotel and showed us around. We had a three bed room. It was quite big so we had enough space. The room had the speciality that it actually had two doors you could access it from.

After we settled down the owner explained us good places to eat in Vaison, we felt very welcome.

Breakfast is served in a terrace with a wonderful view over Vaison.

We liked the charme of this hotel and the friendly staff. Rooms were clean.

Of course WLAN is available and enough power plugs to charge all your gadgets.

We stayed here for two nights in May. Great location; nice, clean rooms; reasonable prices; warm hosts who are very eager to assist with questions. We enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend this B&B.

Based on recommendations in the Rick Steves Provence guide, we booked at charming L'Evêché, a B&B in the medieval sector of Vaison. It is a lovely old house and the hosts, Jean-Loup and Aude Verdier, are warm and welcoming. They serve the best croissants and pain au chocolat we have tasted anywhere (they have lived in Vaison for 35 years and likely are close with the best bakers).

We stayed in the Bleu room, our friends in Rose. The two rooms sit at either end of a hall and there are no other guests on that floor. Bleu has a very nice view over the old and “new” towns.
Read the TripAdvisor reviews--people rave about L'Evêché and so do we. L'Evêché does not accept credit cards, only cash, so hit the ATMs early.

Avoid driving into Vaison’s medieval village, especially from the eastern end of the road (near the Roman bridge). Entering the village that way you’ll encounter many tight spots, difficult turns, and loads of tourists with running kids, making driving hazardous, especially if you have a larger car.

Instead, approach the medieval town from the west, near the end of the longer bridge across the river. Parking is easy on the western road--there are several large lots just before the road narrows, and it is not difficult to wheel bags to L'Evêché from the highest place a car can easily stop. In May there always were spaces for us to park overnight, for free, with no security problems (we left nothing in the car).
