A medieval church, simple but beautiful. It is a very unique church because it has a wall surrounding it and 4 towers as a fortress. The special thing about it is that you can climb to the roof ( about 6€ fee for adults, children free) stairs are narrow but not too long. Very much worth the climb because you get a wonderful view of La Camarge.

Although one side was under renovations, the Church is nice, there is a possibility to climb up the stairs and go to the roof top from which opens a beautiful view of the the city and its whereabouts

The church itself it is not very spectacular, but it is in the middle of a town with low buildings and you can see it from far. It also has a great story and it a good shelter to hide from the afternoon burning sun. It is worth visiting. Beware of gipsy fortunetellers around, they can be very insistent..

This was the last stop for us on the last day of a 12 day trip to Provence, and was perhaps the most spiritual of the churches we visited. The simplicity of the church is moving, and the deep reverence to the saints is evident - and also very moving. The crypt where the relics and St. Sara is can be very warm and crowded with tourists. People wanting a place for quiet prayer can walk up a short stairway for quiet contemplation. The church is still the highest point in the area so paying the couple euros to go up to the roof provides a nice view of the surrounding countryside. There is a lovely shop next to the church devoted to items related to Sara - I bought a statue for my daughter who shares the name. The Camargue cross is widely available in shops around town, too. Grab a sandwich or pizza and walk across the street to the beach - you will be at the spot where the boat landed with the three Marys, Sara, Lazarus, etc...

The church and the Gypsy fascination with Saint Sara was the only reason we came to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer this year. My mother remembers coming here in 1956 and seeing the fabulous Gypsy celebrations back then! She noted how Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer sure has changed since the 1950s. Now it is a bustling little seaside resort that has around 3000 locals in winter and something like 50,000 tourists in summer - and it feels like it!
Sadly of course the true spiritual vibe of the town has been taken over by modern tourism and the ever busy restaurants and shops, BUT the church and the crypt luckily haven't changed at all.
The spirit is still there and it is truly worth a visit. The stairs leading to the roof are obviously worth the trek for the view and while the gypsy women outside can be a hassle, remember that it is BECAUSE of the gypsies that this place is still so special and revered. Maybe we should be kinder to them. Have one less glass of wine and give a donation to somewhere or someone needy.
