I chose this hotel as I had a flight back from Marseille Airport next day, but did not want to stay in Marseille or near the airport. It was a very good choice. Arnoud, his wife and his 3 year old son own and run this lovely little hotel. Arnoud is extremely helpful, and provides maps, information, advice and his phone number in case you have a problem outside normal hours. The hotel is spotless, has air conditioning, locked car park, great breakfast for €7, with Arnoud offering further pots of tea etc. if required. A few minutes will take you to the centre, and a selection of bars and restaurants (including a 1 star michelin, where the chef decides what you will eat!!)
Istres is not a well known tourist spot, but the Church and the local medieval streets are worth rambling. The views are fantastic, they have a beach and a port. You will not hear any English accents, and you will need enough french to read menus etc. The ladies in the tourist office are very helpful, and a visit (free) to their local museum, is worth it for the buildings and cellars alone. The airport is approx 40 minutes, on a scenic and well signposted road.
We need to support privately owned hotels like this, where their passion to please, far outweighs commercial considerations!
