“Go to the Hotel Liautaud if you want to stay in Cassis and like simplicity”
Reviewed September 27, 2010

We were nervous about booking at the Hotel Liautaud because of some poor reviews in Trip Advisor but we found it was cheap and clean and above all in a wonderful position. Ask for a room with a balcony overlooking the port. All life is going on beneath you and you step into the centre of Cassis as you leave the hotel. The beach is two minutes away. We really enjoyed our stay there.

My wife and I stayed two for two nights on a recent visit to Cassis. After arriving late in the evening at the height of the season we were a bit concerned about finding somewhere to stay. The reception staff were really helpful and offered us a room for 83 Euro per night. On entering the room I was a bit disappointed but on seeing the view from the balcony any concerns I had were blown away. The room was small but we only used it for sleeping in, it was a bit noisy at night but as we were on holiday I'm not going to grumble about other people having a good time. As Cassis is such a popular lit place you will be hard pushed find cheap accommodation.
The calanques are fantastic and we did both a walking trip and a boat trip and they should not be missed.

It makes me happy that it is (still) possible to get affordable rooms at such a location in a place like Cassis. You get what you pay for and our room was clean and there wasn't any noice from the street. Book parking in the garage, parking in Cassis is a mess.

I stayed here for three nights, in a largish room on the 2nd floor with a balcony and views looking over the the main square, the port and the ocean in the distance. The hotel has not seen any renovations or updates since the early 1970s (which, in a way, has its own kind of charm, I guess). The people at the front desk were friendly. There`s a lift. The room had a miniscule hospital-style television. The room, though basic and run-down, could not be faulted for being dirty. The location is wonderful - a two-minute walk from the main beach, with plenty of affordable restaurants in the vicinity. Somewhat pricy all the same (80 Euros for a double), particularly in July-August when French vacationers descend en masse to the beaches in the area.
Most people go to Cassis to visit the "calanques" and I certianly recommend it. If you plan to do it on foot from Cassis, I would take the advice of the Tourist Office and do so with appropriate footwear (real hiking boots). The famous Cassis rock is VERY slippery and it can be quite dangerous to navigate even along the marked trails around the calanques. There are also boat rides that leave from Cassis to go the calanques, but I boycotted these (there are too many and they are destroying the natural beauty of the area).
If you want to sunbathe away from the crowds and don`t mind showing some skin, at the "Roches blanches" (follow the "Impasse du Littoral") there is a very friendly nudist beach (mainly gay, but totally tolerant of heterosexual couples) with access to nice water, and with beautiful views of the cliffs across the bay.

I didn't expect a whole lot from this place after reading the reviews on trip advisor, but I definitely expected more than what we got. The room was like my grandmothers 1970s northern michigan cottage. Brown and Blue and Very worn carpet and horrible tiling in the bathroom.

Location was EXCELLENT. Right in the center of town. Can't beat it. Also with a front room you get a balcony and views of the port which are also amazing.

What was a nice bonus was the car park. They charged 10 euro a night for parking in their private garage which was nice as public parking is a mess in Europe. The staff was very helpful and the desk was always occupied.

For the price it was what we paid for, but they should really think about renovations. I can't really say that I desire to stay there again.

  • Liked — Location! and staff
  • Disliked — the room itself.

I booked this hotel based on reviews on TripAdvisor. My husband and I were very disappointed and immediately went in search of a different hotel. We only stayed at Hotel Liautaud that first night because it was too late to back out without paying.

The main word that comes to mind is "threadbare" -- from the battered carpet to the knobby mattress. The oddest quirk to the room was the bathroom door. It was just a hanging, sliding panel that would hardly close. No privacy.

This hotel may be perfectly fine for some travelers, depending on what you're looking for. It is hostel level accommodation at hotel prices. U.S. readers: think Motel 6.

Hotel Le Liautaude has an excellent - if not the best - location in Cassis. It is a standard and clean hotel. However, make sure you get a room with balcony with a view over the harbour and sea. Cassis is worth staying an extra night to benefit this small charming town. The beach is only two minutes walk from the hotel.

  • Liked — The location
  • Disliked — No balcony, however the hotel has plenty of rooms with balcony.
