“L'escale is more just a B&B; it's a home away from home.”
Reviewed November 7, 2010

Valerie runs more than just a simple B&B; L'escale is a home away from home. First, she speaks lovely English and is quick to welcome Americans; second, she knows Cassis well and is generous with her insider information including the best Bouillabaise in town; and third, she is willing to go the extra mile to make your stay a comfortable one. When we first arrived, I was a little put off by Cassis itself, but my worries soon went away when she made us feel so welcome. Then, after dinner in Toulon, we awoke to one of the very best breakfasts we had in three weeks in France: fresh fruit, fresh orange juice, delicious breads, croissants, homemade jams, yogurt, and, to top it off, American pancakes! What more could you ask for? Well, sitting on the terrace overlooking the Mediterranean. We've had a good deal of experience staying at B&B's in the states, and I must say that L'Escale rivals each and every one of them. And, then, there's the view: Cap Canailles looms out over the harbor like a proud ocean liner set to go to sea...and it continually caught my eye (and my camera's lens) from the gated entrance to our private patio to the terrace where we had breakfast. Above all, though, it's the quality of the service, and that is why we were so very, very pleased with l'Escale. Merci bien, Valerie.

We stayed here for three days in late September. The room was spacious and the view was UNBELIEVABLE!! I would wake up in the night just to look at the moonlight over the sea. We had trouble finding our way and we were given a personal escort to the B&B! We could recommend Cassis for anyone looking for a small vacation town with restaurants and leisure.

L'Escale is a B&B in a great spot on the western side of Cassis, about 200m back from the Mediterranean. Valerie and Julien were great hosts, very helpful. They kindly suggested a place for us to eat on our first night and then rang ahead and booked the table for us. There is no pool here, but as the beach is only 200m away, it's not too much of a problem. There is a nice hot tub though. Cassis was a great place to stay - plenty to do for a lazy summer's day and is a really charming gem on this over-built coastline.

Our visit to L'Escale bed and breakfast was as lovely as anyone could imagine. Valerie and Julien went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and special. They are VERY
warm-hearted and gracious. Our room--charming, the view of the sea--spectacular. we are so glad we ended our trip in Cassis (which we loved) at their superior bed and breakfast.

This property and Cassis were the highlight of our two week trip to the South of France. Valerie is a delightful hostess. Her joie de vivre is infectious. The property overlooks the harbor and the Cap de Canaille. There is a private “beach” (really a rocky outcropping) down a short but steep path right next to L’Escale – but be aware that it is very clothing optional. We stayed in the large lower level room, with its own terrace, and it is very charming. Breakfast is a delight on the upper terrace overlooking the Mediterranean and the Cap – we simply did not want to leave! The Cassis Friday morning market is also wonderful, probably along with that in St-Remy-de-Provence, the nicest we have ever experienced. The Cassis harbor and beach are splendid. Be sure and drive up or down the Route des Cretes; the views are simply amazing. Only minuses are the room was a bit on the high side, and obligatory street parking, though we had no problem finding a handy spot. The restaurants in Cassis are also generally overpriced, so we picked up fixings at the local supermarket and ate out on our private terrace as the nearly full moon rose over Cap de Canaille...absolutely sublime.

Valerie and her husband Julien run a welcoming and charming B&B on the outskirts of Cassis. Valerie speaks English and becomes an instant frien, suggesting ways of increasing the enjoyment of one's stay. Our room, the Belvedere, was comfortable. It looks out onto the sea with the Cap Canaille imposingly awesome in the distance. There are some beams that run along the ceiling; so taller people must stoop or bang the head. A large modern tub is in the corner. The toilet is 'semi-private', separated from the room by two steps down and by a string curtain. Although a romantic accommodation, I wouldn't recommend this room for a newly involved couple due to the limited privacy of the WC. In all other respects this was a comfortable accommodation. The room was air conditioned. There was plenty of hot water; and the plumbing was efficient and modern. The B&B is ~a mile from town and ~1/2 mile from the start of the trail to the Calanques. Breakfast is included in the price(160euros in mid-June-no credit cards accepted). Parking was easily found on the street in front of the house. I want to re-iterate our appreciation of Valerie's warmth and hospitality.

My daughter and I visited Cassis in April 2009 and stayed at a B&B called L'escale. The room was beautiful and had a great view of Cape Canaille. Breakfast was wonderful - on a terrace overlooking the water. It's about a 10 minute walk to town and the hosts are gracious and friendly. I recommend it highly.

The town has a beach - it has stones, not sand, but we weren't there for sunbathing. We took walks on trails along the Calanques, went for a boat tour of the Calanques, read and shopped. The food in town was varied and although nothing is really inexpensive, we did find places that weren't terribly expensive and still very good. We liked LePerroquet, Le 8 et demi (great salads), and Marco Polo. A very overpriced and awful place was L'Oustan de La Mar. Steve Ricks recommended it in his book on Provence, but we thought it was very expensive and the food horrible. My daughter thought her fish soup tasted like sand. I had smoked salmon on toast that looked and tasted like Wonder bread. Not exactly the French bread I was hoping for.

We traveled from Paris to Cassis on the train - first a fast one from Paris and then a slower local train from Marseille to Cassis. I thought it was a great way to travel.
