Walking along the port of Cassis, we were offered many choices of the restaurants that align the waterfront. We picked Chez Gilbert, recommended by our hotel. It was obviously the most popular at dinnertime and was crowed. We were lucky to get a table immediately. We sat next to a Frenchman with an American wife and an elderly French lady of 94 years, celebrating her birthday with them. They helped us navigate the menu and we were ready to try some of their suggestions. Having had a late lunch, my wife and I only wanted enough to share. That was our downfall. When explained to the waiter, he said no, we must order two meals, so my wife gave her order and I ordered a salad. Our waiter disappeared and we didn’t him see again for 30 minutes. And that became the pattern for the evening. Even our new friends at the adjacent table thought our service was unbelievably bad. No, we wouldn’t go back.
