Not too many tourists here, no bars or anything commercial around either. Nice to look at, and i you walk to the end of the aquaduct, you get a great view on the surrounding area.

Off the beaten track but a wonderful find. You are able to walk along it and on it and you can get some good pictures without having people around. Also gives some excellent views from the one end.

I don't think you need to be nurdishly anthropological or archaeological to enjoy the Greek-Roman side of Provence. I am not even able to spell those words, let alone retain knowledge of those times and those cultures.

I feel though, and through small bits of imaginings I can enjoy these ancient 'things', that stuff that is just sitting there. The aqueducts at Barbegal cannot compete with their relatives attached to the Pont du Gard [another nearby must-see], but they stir the imagination.

You dismount beneath the ruined arches and walk the length of the dual aqueducts to the top of the ridge. See the 90-degree angle of the far right system -- that went 'round to feed the capital of Arles. Walk through the opening cut out of the rocks -- this is where the left system shot water outward and down into the grand basin; down past the five twin water-wheels of the mills that would grind the grain.

Imagine broad fields of many kinds of grain. Imagine sacked meal carried to Arles and the hundreds of boats ladened with grain, fruits and oils, all bound for Rome....

Can you imagine?

We made a drive here based on recommendation from Rick Steves. It was pretty amazing to see the ancient ruins; so much of it still stands. It provided a lot of photo ops, to start out our trip to Provence.

We came across this free site and really enjoyed it. Basically it is a ruined double aqueduct in nice countryside, that you can walk alongside for about half a mile or so. there are many marked footpaths leading away from this site which look lovely but we didn't have time sadly. Lovely area of countryside just 15 mins NE of Arles.
